I recently replayed Xillia. While I know it has it's flaws, mainly the boring-ass overworld, endless dumb grinding and pretty unlikeable characters, the fightan was quite fun and X2 had some pretty cool level designs (that one solar farm with Aska, the futuristic ruins later).

The main theme is understanding. "Defeating the big bad doesn't mean things will be alright and everything will be fixed, so what should I do instead?". This is where most JRPG fail, you have the hero and the evil guy, so you go on a quest to defeat him, you kill him and game is over, everyone lives happily forever just because.
This is presented midgame when you encounter the final boss in a random map. You have the option to fight him and defeat him, ending the game right there, but doing so when you haven't reached your answer means nothing will change and the world will still be fucked. You defeated him without a second thought because in your eyes he was bad and that's it.
Instead what Sorey does is travel the continent and by himself learns everything about the bad guy, what happened to him, what's happening to the world and what will happen if he's not stopped. He doesn't let anyone tell him second hand, but rather he goes out there and search for the answer himself.
That's why I like this game so much. Sorey is not a mindless hero like most JRPG protagonist.

This is a game where humans afflicted by evil thoughts and bad deeds can literally become corrupted and turn into monsters. Simple enough, and fitting for a game about a messianic figure. Until Rose joins the party that is. Rose is a killer. An assassin. And she is presented as a figure of absolute morals. Rose is for all intents and purposes, the one whose moral guidelines the game presents as true. Rose admonishes Sorey for refusing to kill humans completely taken over by malevolence. See, you can't save humans taken over by the malevolence, you have to kill them, the game says. It's relentless pragmatism. You're only useful if you can get the job done, and done in the way it's supposed to be. Alisha is a hindrance, so Sorey ditches her. That act is unthinkable for any other Tales main character so far. The game explains that Rose is good because she thinks really well before killing people. Because of that she has no bad feelings while doing so. She is the judge, the jury and the executor. For intents and purposes, Rose is a sociopath. Lack of empathy is put on a pedestal. As long as you truly believe you have the moral High Ground, and feel nothing while doing so, killing is fine and pure. It's once again a game about helplessness, about doing what you have to do, but this time in a grim and more bizarely grounded mindset. It doesn't matter why humans turn evil, you're told you can't save them anymore, so you have to kill them. As long as you're the good guy, killing is fine. It's a sense of morality so childish, black and white and . In a game about corruption and people turning bad, the only true recourse is murder. You're told you have to fulfill a prophecy and you do it, no ifs and buts. You kill, because you have the moral High Ground.

Except Zestiria explores its themes sloppily. It masquerades as being more like earlier Tales games. You have to look beneath the surface to realize how messy the writing is. I don't think Zestiria intended to have such a dark message.
