Spoiler-free Rewrite synopsis for animeonlyfags:
Rewrite tells the story of Kazamatsuri Bond, a 27 year old agent of U.N. Special Ops (UNSO).
Bond was an edgy kid, he enjoyed killing bratty children's parents in front of them.
He fought the terrorists of the Greenpeace conglomerate with every drop of his blood, no matter how many dinosaurs they had.
Both factions were fighting over a nuclear device called the Lock, which could destroy the world.
During one such battle Bond was defeated, and put into a coma because of the nuclear device.
Now at age 27, after waking from his coma, Bond decided fuck it and to enter school again, because he still looked like he was 17 from nuclear radiation.
Well he actually has amnesia as a side effect, but he just wants to live it up at school like he never got to.
He wanted to get a girlfriend, mess with his best friend, join a club, become a TV reporter and grope some girl's tits.
To get all of this, he joined a club where he reported on Paranormal stuff with the other members.
Little did Bond know, the members were all undercover agents of UNSO and Terrorist Greenpeace!
His childhood friend also turned out to be the girl whose parents he killed. Apparently she resurrected them into plant zombies, because she's a magical sage.
One friend is a UNSO top agent, one friend has a servant who is Bond's alternative universe self, one friend is literally worse than Hitler, and one friend is a walking biohazard.
If that wasn't enough, the Lock turned up again, starting another war. The Lock is actually a cute deadpan girl, with an obsession for Bond. She sneaks into his bed at night and haunts him.
To top it all off, Bond's blood is now nuclear residue which he can shape at will!
Now Bond must choose a side, but no matter what happens, the earth is fucked either way.
Unless of course he can become a tree, build a canoe with his wood, fly it to the moon and terraform it. That would solve everything.

I feel like the anime is basically going to be a bit of the common mixed in with a new route (Kagari's) compressed into 13 episodes..
A damn shame, because one thing Rewrite was good at was foreshadowing the supernatural elements, and that was basically tossed out.
Like, remember how cray cray it was for the Leaf Dragon to show up in the VN? Kotori's entire route was a fantastic intro where it actually feels like you're caught in the middle of a war while being mostly clueless as to their motives and ideals and just trying to survive.
Should I wait for Rewrite+ before reading or just read the current version of the VN?

Rewrite is nothing like the other Key VNs. Key is traditionally famous for nakige -- games that make you cry, and its focus is on long comedic common routes followed by drama (or melodrama, depending on your preference). Illness features as a prominent plot device, and most Key VNs involve massive suffering before a happy ending.
Key VNs usually include little to no battle or other magic fantasy tropes (except in parody, as in Little Busters), and their works focus heavily on friendship, love, and family themes. They tend to usually be magic realism -- basically set in the contemporary world, with magic as an occasional plot device.

Anime - The Anime

I recommend it. Jun Maeda and the rest of the Key old guard are very talented writers of both comedic slice-of-life and melodrama -- Clannad and Little Busters will make you laugh and cry in equal measure. Kanon and AIR are both still solid reads, although the art especially hasn't held up over time. The anime versions by KyoAni (especially for Clannad) are first-rate adaptations.
Some caveats, though: There's a marked tendency to handwave certain plot elements ("Key magic"), so if you're a stickler for coherence or fine detail, you'll find a certain number of scenes irritating. Not everyone enjoys melodrama either. Also, as Key was the originator of a lot of common nakige tropes, you might feel that certain things are fairly cliche by today's standards.
That's not to dissuade you -- I still think Key's body of work counts as top tier in the VN world -- but you'll have a better time if you err on the side of open-mindedness/being willing to suspend disbelief.

Not him but I suggest you start with the one which anime adaptation you liked the most (assuming you watched them).
Either that or go for Clannad -i.e. second best OST (Air takes 1st), less supernatural stuff on many routes, easier to follow plotline, relatively better art and it's fully voiced. Also considering it got the official translation not so long ago, you can find it on steam for a fair price.

Eh, that's not quite correct. Said childhood friend actually had no relation to Gaia or Guardian at all - she's a druid, a kind of third party that just aims to protect the Key.
Also I probably would have explained things starting fromthe common route rather than from Kotarou's origins, which are only fully explained in Terra..

It's not really meant to be a reliable guide to the story; it's just the joke one with some terms and details changed to be less silly.
It's a very good VN, and well worth the time. The character routes are all very different from each other (some will probably be more suited for your tastes than others), but the real prize is the final true route you unlock after finishing all the character routes. Everything gets tied back together in a really interesting way, and the VN takes advantage of the fact that it's a VN very effectively.

It wasn't just that he assembled a group of completely random people and wow they all happen to be involved in supernatural shit. It feels a lot less contrived in the VN.
