Distant Stars is about how love transcends space and time, 5 centimeter is about leaving the past behind no matter how precious it is and moving on. Conceptually they're similar, thematically very different. Your ignorance literally proved such basic movies are 2deep4u.

But they're not anon. Shinkai doesn't love his narrative or his characters as much as he loves getting his themes across. His stories are really predictable and his characters are quite bland. In fact 5 centimeter could've been his masterpiece if he actually gave characters some dimensionality instead of using them as just objects to get his point across. Garden of Words actually improved upon this. And all his movies despite being being about love convey different themes. Nobody's saying that guy is groundbreaking, but he's not telling the same story over and over, that's just anon being stupid and not actually putting any thoughts in the substance he consumed.
