I love Michiko and the show but I can understand why neither are super popular. The show is fairly unique and doesn't excel at action or romance, its a fairly balanced blend of a road trip drama with humor mixed in. The setting isn't familiar either and probably resonates much better with those familiar with it. I'm half BR and I'd be lying if I said that wasn't one of the reasons I checked the show out and liked it.
So it doesn't have the ingredients for mass appeal and it didn't get exposure on some major platform like adult swim and it isn't an entry level show either.
But I agree, Michiko is a top tier /a/ hottie.

The one thing other country's media gets wrong, sometimes, is that it having all USA-Americans behave identically, when each state really has it's own cultures and customs and such. Like any social-butterfly or well traveled american can talk to someone and then guess which state they're from with ~85% accuracy. There was a fairly large number of Japanese moving to Brazil in the beginning of the last century.
They're kind of seen as black sheep though since there was a disastrous attempt to receive their descendants to counter Japan's population problems - note how the Brazil references in anime never actually seem to acknowledge them.
The closest thing I've seen outside of some live action stuff, where it's just a way to explain why they're going with a Japanese actor, was Oro in Street Fighter 3, who moved to South America around that time.
