Honestly, the secondary couples are probably better than the main in more of the shows that I've seen. I think that's just because their relationship doesn't have to be drawn out for drama. You're usually over-exposed to the MC romance, so a second one can just pop up to be awesome periodically and not overstay it's welcome.
Although, secondary couples rarely get further than the main couple, but they might get together earlier than the main couple.
