1997 looked a lot more like the illusrations then what you posted but casca skin tone goes all over the place in the manga also (but not in the illustrations mind you probably because Kentaro Miura want to make her more visible in the manga )
here is a grayscale comparison just to see that her skincolor in the original anime is as dark as the pages that occur in the manga and is consistent, also remember the darkest pictures in the ops post from 1997 is also in the shadows and dark areas

If someone who hadn't known about the series beforehand had watched this, they'd be pretty hype for a Mad Max 2 looking game.
