Kek holy shit I didn't think they could do a finale this great for a comedy series such as this. It ended perfectly. Sakamoto ended up helping everyone around him, leaving fond memories of him to be remembered by. And that pie ending was just the right combination of sad and funny.
When I first started this series I thought I'd get tired of the humour within a few episodes but I'm glad I remained. This last episode was great.
Really disappointed the wave wasn't really animated. Got a feeling anime only's will have a hard time understanding what happened but whatever.
At least the end was real good.

This studio just couldn't handle the switch between serious to punchline. They constantly kept playing the brooding music despite the punchline already being developed.

I think most people who read the manga and have really read between the lines know that while it's not completely spelled out, there is that hanging implication that he's dying/likely to die.
The "alien" theory is more of a plausible deniability thing, really. Like there is room to suggest that he's not dying and some people really don't want to believe that, so alien it is.
Plus he made that quip about "humans being interesting" or something, I don't recall exactly what.

Because Kumamiko's ending was uncharacteristic, something the mangaka never intended and was simply unsatisfying. It actually makes Yoshio and Natsu out to be villains who mindbroke a little girl for their own benefit.
Conversely Sakamoto's ending, while tragic (if the implications are correct), is in a way satisfying as well. It does not undermine the previous events or make any characters look worse than they're intended to be, in a way it actually gives more worth to everything that happened. Sakamoto was living life to the fullest because there was so little of it left.

It's sad because the good news is brought in a way without melodramatics, but in the same way we've always known Sakamoto: the tragic is de-emphasized and the joyful emphasized. Even if that tragic news is the oncoming death of Sakamoto himself.
This last episode masterfully used subtlety in an industry where overemphasis is the norm.

I don't know about you guys but I've often found myself daydreaming about being popular and disappearing like Sakamoto did, with everyone missing me. It is pathetic, yes, but also rather human, everyone wished to be Sakamoto at least once in their life, and in a way I feel like this is what the author was trying to convey.
Leaving the ending ambiguous like this was perfect in my opinion, this is one of the times where I am not upset about the ending being open.

An optimistic view of things is that Sakamoto is perhaps the Messiah come again. Note how in every action Sakamoto took he he almost certainly improved morals and quality of the students he interacted with. He made hated enemies friends. Protected the weak from the strong. Steered Acchan and his gang off the path of delinquency and towards goodness and making something of themselves. He managed to get them to give up smoking and at the very least reconsider porn. He even managed to redeem the devil himself.
However, the arc of the Messiah can never be complete without death. Without him leaving, the class would only have ever constantly looked at Sakamoto, and never fully taken his teachings and ways to heart; to live their lives to their fullest.And just as every Messiah requires a death, he will have his rebirth. In episode 13, and the Hayabusa one spin off, we are going to see a mysterious stranger come help out the students and only later will it become apparent that it is Sakamoto returned.

What was Fukase's deal?
Was interesting how he seemed to be the opposite of Sakamoto, similar as an enigma, but instead of helping others selflessly, he screwed with people for his selfish gain and enjoyment. Sakamoto leaves after his year but his memory is engraved, Fukase stayed for ages on and was present as his legacy.
I came much closer to crying in this than any other show this season, or last.
