Casts in both have their share of good characters and shit ones, the FTEs in 2 were a lot better though

"VR World" is something you can write off as being part of the setting assuming it's properly integrated into the story and so on (and in DR2's case it fits in alongside the other wacky tech we've had in the series already), but I don't think there'll ever be a mystery story in general where "the mastermind had a twin all along" doesn't not seem like bad writing, even when it is integrated into the story. It's a type of plot twist that's often considered a joke in this genre for a lot of people.

I reckon that if the player had any chance at all to interact with the actual Junko earlier on, people would have less of an issue with it. Her FTEs and the conversation about her different appearance (that was explained away with reasoning more convincing than what the actual truth ended up being, honestly) was foreshadowing - this doesn't have to conflict with it being considered a copout by people. It's considered a cop-out because a lookalike character had to be created and hidden for most of the game just to explain how things happened, as opposed to the percieved character actually doing it themselves. I said earlier that it isn't the set-up that bothers people but the actual nature of the plot twist, it's never going to not be seen as a lazy alternative to other possibilities they could've gone for in any story.

Nah, I'm pretty certain that this isn't the case. This is the sort of genre where people like to be outsmarted by the plot. There are other hard-to-see and more intricately planned out plot twists in this series that people seem to be fine with. I genuinely feel it's just people having an inherant dislike for this type of plot twist and it's not something specific to DR, like I said it's the type of plot twist that's frowned upon in general.

even before IF, really. Even just taking DR1, Junko's an unreliable source on Mukuro. If Mukuro really loved despair as much as Junko did, why did she react like she did after getting impaled? Shouldn't she have been super happy like Junko was when she was getting executed? So why was she horrified?

Because her death was entirely out of the left field. She thought she was just going to be removed from the school and locked in a dungeon for the remainder of the killing game.
Kind of hard to be all "UUU DESPAIR" when you've suddenly been impaled 12 different ways.

I still think Junko would've reacted differently had it been her. I think she would've relished something like that, DR1 and DR0 really drill into your head how she loves her plans going up in smoke. An unexpected death would be awesome for her, I think.

Ryoko still had memories up to a certain point IIRC, right? While it was a guise in practical terms I dunno if it's right to just consider it not real, it still was Junko to some extent.
Also people acted as if having multiple SHSL skills was a massive deal, but I get the feeling that I ended up interpreting it differently to everyone else somehow? Gyaru/Fashionista seems like something that could be constructed from being the SHSL Analyst pretty easily, as opposed to being two seperate/distinct things.
