I like to pretend like I believe it is the apex of anime as a medium, but truthfully I've never read or seen it.

Akira, GitS and Miyazaki's are hated on /a/ because everybody else acknowledges them as masterpieces.
Now garbage like Evangelion and Madoka are loved here because no one outside weebs loves them.
It's a truly great manga, but that just means its in the same class of many other great works. It's a good story but very vague towards the end. The movie is visual porn but suffers from its constricted run-time, since it essentially cuts of the middle portion of the story which explains everything.

Great manga, pretty but kind of nonsense movie.
That would be a nice picture if it wasn't for the atrocious character design.
