While Haifuri certainly is not as good as GuP, I think the show didn't do as well as it could have because it was unfortunate to come out at one of the worst times. Had it come out say last summer it would have done much better. The thing is, Haifuri grabs the attention of a lot of the GuP fans, and GuP fans saw their interest in GuP renewed and multiplied by that magnificent movie which surpassed expectations. Haifuri suffered from a large part of its potential fanbase buying GuP instead or simply comparing it to GuP excessively and finding it wanting compared to the awesome GuP movie. For others it created unrealistic expectations in the first three episodes of the show which obscure the ability to see the rest of the show by its own merits, seeing only the "I thought it was going to be this but then it wasn't" aspect.
Long story short, comparisons are odious and the first impression is the strongest.

The only drawback of 1/35 kits is the space they need, but yeah, they have a lot more details than 1/72 tanks. There are a couple of 1/48 tanks or 1/56/ 28mm tabletop game kits, but there is not so much variation and the later are often resin kits, which are not really good for starters.
