GIntama does drama a lot better than a lot of drama focussed anime. I think the balance between comedy and drama compliment each other: after seeing Kagura doing some ridiculous shit, we grow attached to her so it hurts when something bad happens to her. Similarly, after seeing Tsuki as a serious character with strict discipline, it makes it funnier when she gets confused about Gintoki or gets drunk.

I like the series and I've invested a fair amount of time into it but most of the serious arcs try so desperately hard to tug at your heart strings it feels clumsy and forced
