I thought it was too melodramatic even as a kid though I liked episode 1 before the homoerotic Chris scene came up. I also didn't like the animation throughout most of it, it was choppy as hell.

The "NORMAL KID LIKE U" stuff is always really lame. I remember checking out the Megaman OVA and it seemed AWESOME at first but then they did some lame-ass "Megaman travels to the REAL WORLD from out of this kid's NES and the kid shows him around town" shit and I just thought "why am I watching this" and closed the window.
It could've been an entire OVA like the amazing Japanese pilot animation with the really game-accurate art style for the otherwise shitty Megaman cartoon but instead they just shat the bed.

The OVA is irrelevant, Adventures is unwatchable slapstick garbage, Underground is somehow EVEN WORSE and X is a Sonic cartoon where literally everybody else is more interesting than the core Sonic animal cast.
Meanwhile SaTaM has unbelievably, ridiculously good character writing (Sonic and Sally are better couple than anybody else in television, and that's just two characters), and it can pack in a masterful amount of drama and plot progression into a mere, what, twenty five minutes?
There is a reason BOOM is a middlong comedy show and it Sticks to comedy: it knows it couldn't compete in any other field.
