Go eat some cake, bunhead!

What's your favorite form of sailor moon? Personally I really like Neo Queen Serenity.
Her design is really well exectuted, and I have a love for animated mothers.

Sailor Moon would be a lot better if there wasn't a generic monster of the week every week. The best episodes were those which had a lot of slife of life content or featured one of the main villains (i.e. those who actualy had developed personalities). I rather see the Sailor Team fight against Zoisite for a dozen times than watch a boring battle against a megaman-tier monster that has an unoriginal gimmick.

I'm sorry for your shit taste. The MOTWs are fun (especially the Lemures).
>>
>>143493939

I watched every episode of Sailor Moon at least twice and I can barely remember any MOTWs because they're so forgettable. The only one I remember clearly is that cat monster. I remember it because the episode was excellent and the cat who turned into the monster had a very cute relationship with Luna. That's how all the monsters should be done. Give them a mini-backstory and then we care about them. Instead, we got lazyily designed characterless monsters. I bet that the inspiration for 99% of them was some random object the author happened to look at the time.

Holy shit you are lucky, just watch the whole thing in Spanish in the based latin dub and avoid the annoying squeaky voices in every other version. You guys got the absolute best version of the series.

You download the original show with subs and watch it. Why do you make everything so hard on yourself by defaulting to dubs? It actually takes more work to find a dub than the original.

Watch the Sailor Moon redub on kissanime or hulu or dvd/bluray.

Read the manga

Then watch Crystal if you want hilarious poor quality in the first two seasons.
>>
>>143501822
Seiya please. These delusions aren't healthy. Usagi doesn't feel the same way about you that you do about her.
https://youtu.be/-juH7wyC1nw
Also, way to be a bitch about it.
>>
>>143494200
>I watched every episode of Sailor Moon at least twice and I can barely remember any MOTWs because they're so forgettable.

Same here, though Tetis is the one that stands out to me more than the others since she has an actual relationship with Jedite. The anime really handled them terribly and they mostly feel repetitive and completely out of place compared to all the other elements of the show. SuperS was the only season where the format actually made sense and was handled in a reasonably interesting way. The irony is that virtually every other MotW based magical girl show that game out after SM became popular did this way better than SM ever managed too, and either manages to have good fights or actually have the enemy tie into the issues the characters are dealing with.

It strike me as utterly weird that a show with such exceptionally high quality direction as SM is stuck to the most repetitive and lame MotW format I've ever seen in a show.
>>
>>143502036
> Usagi doesn't feel the same way about you that you do about her.

Half the point of anime Stars is that Usagi probably would have fallen for Seiya if she knew that Mamoru wasn't coming back.
>>
>>143502192
But she didn't and she doesn't, so who cares?
>>
>>143502257
Because that's what makes the whole dilemma interesting. You don't have to want Seiya x Usagi specifically in order to empathize with Usagi in that situation. Were the scenario different, the drama would be weaker for it.
>>
>>143502626
Except I disagree with your fundamental premise.
I don't remember Usagi even once indicating interest in Seiya beyond friendship, and I remember numerous times her indicating her lack thereof.
>>
>>
>>143502771

Not that guy, but she goes on a date with Seiya and makes it pretty evident that she is attracted to him. But then cuts the date short because she remembers Mamoru.

There's also other examples of her questioning herself and the other senshi teasing her. Its plainly obvious that she will always be true to Mamoru, but it does set up that she could have liked him if Mamoru wasn't around.

>>
>>143497638
>POP figure

They look ugly, imo.
>>
>>143504426
Look at the viz website, they've finished resubing the entire series already, not counting the specials and movies, which we may never get.
The redub goes to the end of R currently.
>>
>>143501865
the redub isn't on kissanime.

>>143491757
I'd suggest watching the old anime on hulu, either the viz redub or the subs. Though, I prefer torrenting for long series' like this.
Crystal got better in season 3, but you'd need some knowledge of the first two story arcs to even start that season.

It's very good, i'd recommend it to anyone.
The effects are pretty cheesy though, but it was 2003 cgi.
The writing is great, and some of the story liberties they took were really awesome.
Lots of fans think this is the best version of the first story arc, and I agree.
>>
>>143505235
It's pretty good. The characterization is great and it does a good job of keeping the zanyness from the 90s anime. If you pay close attention you'll realize that they incorporate a lot of elements from later arcs and even the anime into the first arc to keep things interesting for someone already familiar with Sailor Moon. The actors take a while to get into their roles and the effects are pretty bad but aside from that, I absolutely loved PGSM.

That's one of the reasons why SuperS was enjoyable to me.
I felt like the monster of the week stuff really worked in that arc because they were dealing with circus freaks.
In all other arcs, it feels forced.
That being said, S had the best Monster of the Week designs in my opinion. Unfortunately for a story like the infinity arc, it also really pegged down that season for me in the old anime. The only reason I liked S was because of the comedy, and i'm an Ikuhara fag.

It was around 2007 and I was around 9-10. I was walking around recess looking for someone to talk to, since I was a lonely kid and all.

I saw a girl that was playing with a moonstick toy by herself and I decided to give her some company since she looked lonely, too.

She was such a huge sailor moon fan and talked about it so much that I felt like I had to watch it too, and due to the US not airing sailor moon on tv after 2001, I had to watch the japanese version online.

I was literally watching one episode per week because my parents used to restrict my computer time so I could study more, so I finished the entire series within 2-3 years.
And that's basically my story of how I got into sailor moon.

It could work. It just couldn't be supported by the weak love story. The secondary characters would have to support it, like in other good slice of life shows like Working!! or Azumanga Daioh. I mean, we all love Sailor Moon, but everyone but Usagi, Rika, Chibi Usa, Haruka and Seiya were drastically ignored. Even Mamoru was kind of pointless, despite being part of the main plot.

I agree. The problem with every MotW show is when a MotW is very clearly shoehorned in at the last minute and ruins the flow of the episode.

Fun fact, the director of Jetman actually wanted to do away with there being a battle in every episode but the higher-ups supposedly said no because it never happened.
>>
>>143520391
>What if we make a cut compilation of the all the slice of life parts of SM?

I'd seriously argue that this would be one of the most appropriate ways to abridge it and actually make it more consistently solid. The high level plot and drama is absolutely crucial to making it as good as it is, so that would be kept along with the SoL, but at least half the MotW plots could be stripped out in favor of condensing the pacing and combining the character development of multiple episodes and avoiding the parts where the writing is weaker.
>>
I'm rewatching Sailor Moon in japanese and I realized she sounds different in the last 3 episodes of the first season.
Turns out Chibiusa's seiyuu was filling in for her, and to be honest with you guys I find her voice more natural for Usagi than Kotono...
>>
>>143519901

>>
>>143522657
This seems to be a Toei thing, in that they're able to attract the highest quality talent in the industry, but then force them into their own constraints and there's nothing you can do because there's no other studio who can pull off the same things.
>>
>>143519901

So like every other magical girl show before sailor moon was made?

Besides the transformation part anyway.
>>
>>143519901
The charm of Sailor Moon was that it broke the mold for the magical girl genre during it's time with the trope of using magical girls to fight baddies, and save the day.
There's no point of taking the butter out of the show.
>>
>>143524715
>>143524796
Sailor Moon is better plotwise than the mahou shoujo before it, the MotW was just the necessary evil to allow the series to have more active antagonists that should otherwise be done away with, as the musicals do.

Most mahou shoujo before Sailor Moon was more like CardCaptor Sakura. Still had fighting and transformations. Sailor Moon just put a Sentai spin on it.

The anime however was an even more drastic change. And did new things for Slice of Life. I'd say the changes to the slice of life segments is the most impacting thing about the anime. Which is why the reboot (Crystal) felt so dry and bad. It had the same love story and sentai parts, but lacked the reaction images and comedic sub notes that Junichi Sato pioneered in the first anime.

While CCS is probably my favorite anime, I have to admit that it probably wouldn't have had so many reaction images and comedy if Sailor Moon hadn't come first.

>>143525218
The show shouldn't be pure SoL, but there's just no need for more than the occasional monster. I'd actually rather them go a more classic route and have untransformed humans and criminal gangs be the mooks more often when appropriate. That would just work better. Like I said, the issue with the monsters is just how disconnected they are from the rest of the show and how they force everyone to come out and resolve things the exact same way each time. There are plenty of MotW shows with much greater variety.
>>
>>143525253
>Most mahou shoujo before Sailor Moon was more like CardCaptor Sakura
Cutie Honey (the 1973 version) may have been an exception to this but yeah, it still didn't have the sentai aspect either.

They were shoehorned in the show, though. The enemies in the manga were dealt swiftly (even Crystal S1 failed hard at this) and the ocasional monster is just a throwaway. This why I will always feel contempt against the 1992 anime, that and how they turned Usagi from a competent but somewhat silly girl into a full blown idiot.
>>
>>143498612

>They were shoehorned in the show
The manga was every bit as bad.

>The enemies in the manga were dealt swiftly
Which is the problem, almost every mid-boss tier villain in the manga is the equivalent of a MotW in the anime, so it just has much less depth and variety. It's no less formulaic, it's just shorter overall but no less filled with filler, since most of the main cast have less to them than one off side characters in the anime.

>how they turned Usagi from a competent but somewhat silly girl into a full blown idiot

Oh please, I hate this just as much as you do and agree that this, along with the MotW, is the anime's greatest problem. Hell, I'll probably get shit on here for saying this here, but even DiC bothered to take Serena's character development more seriously than the '92 anime did with Usagi. The old anime took over four seasons to get her to the level of self awareness she attains by the end of the first season in every other adaptation.
>>
>>143526580

I'm literally rewatching that right now. Mamoru ignoring Usagi just because of a few random dreams is so annoying. Until out of nowhere he doesn't give a fuck anymore and chooses to be with her anyway. I love it when a show subverts my expectations.

Also, Chibi Usa isn't as bad as people make her out to be. They did a good job of making her the butt of jokes and showing she is just as immature as her mom.

>The old anime took over four seasons to get her to the level of self awareness she attains by the end of the first season in every other adaptation.

that's exactly why I'm sympathized with her, and the most annoying part is Mamoru didn't even tell her the true reason why he dumped her.

all the episodes after that where Mamoru giving Usagi cold shoulders is pretty heart slicing to watch since Usagi haven't give up on him and tried her best to fix her relationship with Mamoru.

Demande isn't "dominant," he's a rapist.
Not in the "SJW" sense, in the sense that he tried to have sex with Usagi, she said no, physically attacked him to get him to stop, and he kept on going until Mamoru intervened and got her out of there.
I can sympathize with some of Demande's motivations, but I cannot comprehend shipping him with Usagi unless you hate her.

Just taking a wild guess because I am a guy and these scenes do nothing for me but maybe is it how their transformation showcases each girl's full figure and is just one step away from being a fully naked scene, their movements can also be seen as if they were stripping (in a strange striptease way) but... you know, reverse, because they are putting clothes on.
They are not naked but some people like the imagination of it, especially because all the people around them, the heroes, the monsters, etc. everyone gets to see her.
In my opinion, it's pretty much the female-friendly version of things like these, it's not really erotic, it's just... it is what it is?

It was a strange experience because I really loved it but at the same time I was thinking that I should hate it because it's a girl's show. Eventually in the mid to late 90's I started to secretly look at websites for Sailor Moon, eventually discovering dirty pictures.
Now I'm in my 30's and posting in a thread like this at 5 AM. Maybe I should have watched the morning business report.

Heard we were celebrating moon rabbits in here

People keep kissing Usagi and she likes it, I'm going to drop this.

She's meant for Endymion only
>>

She's a teenage girl, anon. They're all sluts.

>It aired on Fox in the mornings where I lived- I believe this was '92 or so.

What Fox are we talking about here?
>>
>>143539411
Technically (excluding Mamoru) there are 3 persons who kissed her.

The first one is Demande, but Usagi clearly dislike it.

Second is from Haruka and third is from Seiya, but they are originally a girl. And kiss between girls is just OK.

Yeah but I don't like women.

Just like any other program I discovered in the TV. What's funny is I never found it the anime girly enough to not watch it, I enjoyed a lot and after watching Crystal S3 I want to try to re-watch some arcs. I don't exactly remember my age when I started to watch Sailor Moon but I was surely minor than Hotaru.

Demande would disagree

Seya is both a man and a woman.

So, I dropped Crystal after the first 3 eps, but I heard that at some point, the shoe got significantly better (less QUALIYY) due to some director/animator guy jumping in. Is that true? Was it the beginning of S2 or S3? Now that it's over, should I get back to Crystal?

The character design in S3 is great, only reason why I watched it honestly.

I probably would have liked the show more if it was cute sol

Was her year of birth ever explicitly given as 1978?

Sure, that's what they all say.
She was clearly asking for it, anon.

She was 14 years old in 1992. 16 in 1997 for some reason (I'm guessing there's a time skip with SuperS and Stars)
The anime was specifically set during that time period with the usage of technology, fashion, and other trends.

So if we're going by that, Usagi/Sailor Moon is about 38 years old now.

Why not watch the original 90s anime?
>>
>>143543082
Didn't start watching it yet have to though but the plot gets better by Season 2 and the designs change to Precure style by Season 3.
>>
>>143544155
Or 35/26 years old if you want to be technical with her being 16 when the anime ended, and 17 when the manga ended..

On UPN
They had stopped showing Ronin Warriors to put it in it's place.

Being a little kid, I looked at the colors and elemental abilities and thought that they just made a replacement for girls, and thusly I fucking HATED Sailor Moon with a fiery passion.

Of course, I watched it anyway, and slowly became a fan. I'd have to say, overall, Sailor Moon is the better franchise, even though I love Ronin Warriors to this very day.

Because the majority of the fandom on sites other than 4chan, I might even be wrong there, are people that have seen a few episodes of the dub as a kid, and pretend they know everything about the series thinking that it's about feminism, and they use it as their soapbox.
