I find it kind of sad how this anime was so good at everything else except the narrative, and everyone is hugely devaluing it solely because of that. Cinematographic direction, art direction, sound direction, character design, scoring, voice acting were all top notch stuff here, but all anyone seems to care about on /a/ is the narrative- completely ignoring the value of every other technical or artistic aspect. The flowers in the ED? The rooftop scene in episode 12? The entirety of the Honoka episodes? Splendid stuff.

The story was utter schlock, but Kiznaiver is at least a 7/10 and probably an 8 because everything else was so damn good. What a great anime.

Hiroshi Kobayashi did an outstanding job here for a first timer- on everything aside from working with the writer, that is- and I hope he gets a lot more work (hopefully not saddled with shitty writers like Okada next time). He was the assistant director for Rage of Bahamut too, which was surprisingly great for the first half; he shows a lot of promise.

>>
>>143455860

The story is the crux of most anime. This wasn't slice of life shit, it was a serious anime meant to try and convey an important message.

It failed spectacularly.

The rest of it was quite good but that doesn't excuse the fact that the story went full retard. To the point where you're left bewildered by the stupidity of the characters and the plot. The lack of consequences also diminishes the character growth and cheapens the already shaky writing.

It's not like the writing was a smudge on an otherwise beautiful picture. Kiznaiver is the proverbial polished turd.
>>
>>143455860
>I find it kind of sad how this anime was so good at everything else except the narrative, and everyone is hugely devaluing it solely because of that.
The narrative is one of the most important factors for any medium trying to tell a story. If the narrative is shit the rest of the work doesn't matter.

Yeah, this is where I disagree. I feel that valuing the narrative as absolute over every single other facet of a work is unfair and possibly a childish way of looking at things- no offense intended.

Calling it a polished turd especially disgusts me, as it relegates all these other elements to being mere frills with little to no artistic value. To me, it's as if saying that a painting has intrinsically less work than a novel. Just because a work tells a story, doesn't mean that that's the only thing it does, or even what should be focused on.

A boy falls in love with a girl.

Unable to confess, he is gifted by a deus ex machina with the girl's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.

But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.

>Can you explain why it doesn't say "animes" here?
Probably because there is another definition on Oxford that lists "anime" as an uncountable. Inconsistency, basically. Oxford isn't a solely American English dictionary.

>>143456663
I'm perfectly willing to admit that the proper term is "anime" should someone provide me with a dictionary definition specifically regarding the American English usage of anime and its classification as a mass noun. So far no one has done that. They have claimed:
>But in Japanese there are no plurals
>But in this different subset of English it is described as a mass noun
etc.

Provide me with a proper source for your claims and I will agree with you.

Drama can be used as mass noun and that's what it is in this sentence. Also if you bring up thrillers, see >>143456750

>I admit I am a purist when it comes to my anime and I like it in its original English subs.

>Nowhere in that definition does it imply or state that anime is a mass noun in American English.

Does it make fucking sense to be a purist for only a single fucking anime? Learn to read between the lines.

How about you provide us with an AMERICAN ENGLISH source that states that the plural of anime is animes.
>>
>>143454902
95% of all anime make me think that although I stopped expecting anything else. If it happens once a year or so I get more impressed if I didn't expect anything anyway.
>>
>>143456997
Burden of proof is on you, though. You (and others) ruined the thread with you >animes shitposting.

None of the dictionary definitions for American English I have posted have stated that "anime" is an irregular noun or mass noun. The only definitions that have supported that claim are from other subsets of English.

Thus you can logically conclude that it is pluralized just like any other regular noun.

Mamoru Oshii is probably the only director in the world who makes art films under the guise of traditional drama.
Hey retard, a word's grammatical function is based on how it's used, not because people naming it. Mass noun can be used like a plural, that's why it is not 'drama'.
It was fun. I haven't this for quite a while. I bid you adieu.

that guy doesn't take wiktionary for a credible source, find something else
>>
>>143457118
What he takes for credible is irrelevant, when he's been unable to provide even 1 (one) source to back up his claim.
>hurr I dont find this credible
Then there's no point in replying to him because he'll say that towards every single source provided to him. See >>143456561

>trying to make sense of retarded word the Japanese loaned from English who loaned it from French and reincorporated into English

As far as I'm concerned, "animé" is a frog adjective from "dessin animé" and should not be used as a noun to indicate a series nor should it be pluralised by itself. If you want to pluralise, simply use shows, series, "dessins animés" and movies. I even cringe a little when the style is described as anime but the nips have cuter accents than the anglos so I can forgive them a little.

That's only true if it's a simple mistake. When you fuck up something, like anime(s) and then try to defend the usage of it, or something really retarded like asking for source on a Yotsuba image, it's not new people calling others new to fit in.
>>
>>143456003
>Again, I'm not using the Japanese term. I'm using the English term.
No, you retard - you're using a Japanese word. If you were using the English term it's based off of, you would say "animation." And it's "anime" for both singular and plural for the same reason "millenium" becomes "millenia" when pluralized - it follows the grammar rules of the language it came from, which in the case of "millenium/millenia" is Latin.

Now less posting, more lurking.

Ha ha, sure. Most anime can't keep up a coherent narrative without going full retard or MINDFUCK at the end. Anime watchers are so used to this course of action that whenever a show does stick to its premise and delivers a coherent ending it's being dissed as bland and predictable.
