The biggest problem is that the show struggles to reach even a passable level of animation quality when it isn't one of their in-house ADs directing (of which there are like 3 out of a dozen).
Inconsistency and some QUALITY is normal for a Yugioh anime, but even when so many of the stills are poorly drawn, something stinks.
Even trying to ignore the animation problems, the general art direction is somewhat more generic than past series (besides GX), especially after the show abandoned unique action duel fields.

There are always seiyuu who out there who could use more work, including newcomers trying to break into the field, which ultimately keeps most salaries low. A lot of the more famous seiyuu supplement their income with events/interviews/character songs and other additional things like that related to what they do, rarely do they get lavishly paid from the actual job, since charging astronomical (relatively) prices places you out of the competition.

It is still better than pretty much the entire franchise. Dark Signers almost actually was a truly good and coherent run but then sex cult and BBT happened so GX is still easily the best we've got.
At least GX had a lot of fun duels, easily the best cast outside of FUCKING MAEDA, and I personally enjoyed how extreme and weird it got. Also Judai best boy and the only MC that had a good character arc.

Zexal is so much better and consistent than GX that it hurts. The story is consistent, the production values are much higher and the characters aren't set aside to make the MC look good. And DM has the best writing out of all the YGO shows.

For comparison, here's the GX watch guide covering episodes 1 - 104 as by the time season 3 hit, every episode then was pretty much plot. According to the guide, there are about 20 episodes that can be considered skippable without loss to the plot and 16 episodes that are borderline interesting watch/skip. I myself wouldn't recommend skipping any of them as even the skippable episodes can be a fun watch.There's also a few things I disagree with on the guide, like how wrong it is on 85 - 86. 85 is the episode with Pegasus and 86 is the most filler episode to ever fill. 40's description fits more with 43 than 40, along with 40 being a duel against one of the Seven Stars, yeah...

I'll agree that GX had the most fun duels mostly because they were all one-off gimmicky duels since there isn't much of a plot to the show.
I'll also agree Judai has the best development for a protagonist as far as the anime series are concerned.
Everything else wasn't very good though. So at the end of the day all you have are some fun duels and a good main character which is pretty imbalanced. DM, 5DS, and Arc-V are more balanced and better executed series even with all the sex cult crap that happened to 5Ds.

It isn't just about Reiji and Yuzu. It's about every single character being sidelined this arc. Yuya is literally the only Lancer that has won a duel. Shun, Sawatari and Gon have only won single tag duels/battle royals when they had Yuya on their team. Everyone lost to Kaito except Yuya. 4 people lost to the twins so Yuya could look better by beating them. Edo didn't even get a chance to look good and was just treated as fodder by Yuya. Yuya is reaching Yusei levels of Jesus this arc.

I think she out did Asuka in how cucked she was through to be fair Asuka never made any obvious passes at Jaden to come shuffle her deck. In fact, it felt like Asuka's crush on Jaden only existed as some sort of obligation due to her being the only female character in the show. I still don't know what the hell they were trying to do with Blair returning in season 3, she did nothing, her cards sucked, she barely had a relationship with the main characters and she didn't even duel more then 4 times.
