The first half was dumb in a very Gainax sort of way. Playing up silly stuff for some comedic antics, if all recall, almost all of Episode 3 or was it 4 was just that. It's great.
The second half is where they get a little more self serious with the tone in a few ways while also still trying to be stupid, and it fell flat for me at the time, but I've since seen stuff like Miami Connection and MD Geist, so it's all good now.

KLK nad TTGL both promise something insanely rad but then nobody at the studio seems to remember what the show was supposed to be about. It's kind of hilarious how they aspire to be such dumb fun shows about explosions and hotbloodedness but keep spewing more and more bullshit lore as they go in an attempt to justify the ridiculous shit happening on screen like some bad sci-fi. It turns from THE ROBOT/DRESS RUNS ON FIGHTING SPIRIT/BLOOD AND BEATS UP OTHER ROBOTS/DRESSES to them yammering something vague while fighting floating inanimate objects. And there's even politics and depression in between.

For TTGL especially, there's a lot more going on than just big dumb action. It's a coming of age story on the biggest possible scale, as well as story about the need for balance between reckless ambition and cold practicality. Just because you didn't get the 100% dumb action you wanted doesn't mean there wasn't more there.

The best thing that came from KLK was pic related. KLK was a fun show with a very flawed execution and some stretches of awful episodes, much like TTGL.
