However, Mr. Anno does not think that this will mean an end to anime as an artistic form of film. He points out the possibility of the centres of anime production moving to other areas of Asia with good conditions.

Monogatari was a juggernaut series at one point, but sequel decay is a real thing. Interest has been waning progressively over the years that it's been ongoing and the ever-increasing number of volumes and episodes one must trudge through to catch up becomes a barrier of entry to new fans. It's sort of like how entry-level weebs lament needing to watch 700 episodes of one piece to catch up. There's just too much monogatari for new fans to go through, so while old fans gradually lose interest and abandon it, it's also not bringing in many new ones.
The anime has been on and off with no set or consistent schedule for 7 years now, and the LNs have so thoroughly and utterly jumped the shark that they're stuck doing interquels, the literal last resort in "I can't let go of my dead franchise" milking.
How long ago was Owarimonogatari published? Owarimonogatari, marketed as the beginning of the finale of the franchise, which then got a sequel and then just sidestepped around the whole "ending" thing to keep fucking going ad nauseum.
The publisher shot themselves in the foot by handing such an important adaptation to Shaft. They did a good job with it, but their inability to maintain a production schedule meant that instead of getting regular series that made the most of its popularity, we got sporadic ONAs and occasional mini-seasons that just cropped up whenever they managed to finish them, and a movie that could have been a major blockbuster blowout riding on the massive surging popularity of the first season, but was instead trapped in production hell for most of a decade because it was simply beyond the scope and talent of the studio responsible. They missed the boat and now the ship has sailed and the franchise is sinking.

I personally enjoy the fuck out of the series. The fan base on /a/ is cancer, but the show has its merits. The animation is gorgeous and the story is 10/10. My best friend irl introduced me to the series years ago because he has read every volume (he is a Japanese-American). The kizu hype should not be downplayed in Japan. It was everywhere. The issue was the time of year that the first part came out and the fact that a lot of people who had read the novels know the story and opted to just watch certain parts.

This is actually a pretty damn mediocre season in terms of sales.
Just from these numbers alone, only 5 shows broke 5k while nothing broke 10k. There was no major juggernaut success taking up all the sales and interest, yet everything underperformed as though there had been. Just by these numbers alone it'd look like the industry is doing very poorly.
It's most likely because the movies released during this season, which aren't listed here, ate up most of those sales, but without that context, this just looks like an abysmal fiscal quarter for physical sales.
