It was just teasing because he never did anything to advance a situation or relationship until the very end. That's why she dropped him, because he hadn't built up enough points to enter the space pirate's lover route. But that other girl stuck around and was even swinging the bat at him in the end, so he'll move on into the future with other opportunities.
I will say that I always read his character as having more or less seen through Mamimi from the start but still being slightly interested in her because the circumstances made her pseudo-affection a low hanging fruit. She was using him as a crutch, and he went with it for fun and as his own crutch, but the high level teasing of a space pirate crippled him beyond what could be dealt with by a mere crutch.
It's all just stages of first love moving toward self-actualization. The one that's a mistake, the one that becomes a miss due to hesitation, and the steady possibility of success in the everyday.
