Let's put it this way. There's a miniaturized tank with miniature people inside controlling it and it's opponent is a fully equipped marine. Let's say the size difference is roughly the same as that between a mech and a real tank.

Can the marine beat the miniature tank?
>>
>>143383035
Depends on the size of the miniature tank and its armament.
>>
>>143383068

Let's say it's exactly the same as the latest cutting edge tanks, except in miniature and that everything works as intended despite being in miniature. The marine has the latest standard issue rifle and armor.

>>

>cubes and squares a shit.
Because supersized machines are extremely handicapped by the fact that they are too large. I understand you though. Your previous mecha would have no chance in hell of standing up to tanks if you allowed for physics to work.

>Everything just works for the sake of the experiment.
Well, the tank would still be able to shoot much further and much more precise than the soldier, so on an open plane the soldier loses immediately.
But just shrinking the tank would be unfair to it. You'd increase its armor too up to the point where a single shot of the soldier wouldn't be a certain kill any more. And then the soldier loses on any territory despite being at a huge advantage because the mechanics of tanks are still reality bound, and not super-fast like the ones of your proposed mecha.
Armor and reach. That's what makes the tank great.

A mech will always be weaker than a tank. It's a design issue.

A tank is a simple machine by comparison. It is a gun on a turret on treads. There's far less things to worry about when it comes to operating a tank vs operating a mech.

In cost, in repairs and maintenance, in mass production, in support of infantry, in target profile, in defense against air strikes/other tanks/artillery/urban infantry a tank wins against the mech every single time. There is not one situation in which a mech is better off than a tank, factoring in the costs of war.

The same reason why a mech lose is why hitler's retarded obsession to design the biggest fuck-off tanks (tiger II, maus, even ratte) made them lose the war even harder than they would've.

The future of overland combat is in mass-produced hunter-killer drone swarms. Imagine a horde of remote-controlled drones nimble enough to go through windows or up stairs or open doors, going house-to-house like infantry does today. And the ace pilots controlling them don't even have to be in the same fucking continent as you, or they could just be auto-piloted to kill anything living in the area.

It's really cool to see tanks evolve from snail-moving pillboxes to shitty armoured cars to the "real" tanks of the mid-WW2 era to today's cumulation of all the lessons learned.

The extremely low profile, the flat turret, the reactive armor of today's master tanks would probably make hitler cream himself in despair.

>>143384824
The T-34 is the forefather of modern tanks. It was the most produced tank in the war (second place is the M4 Sherman), it was much better than Panzer 3s & 4s and lead to the creation of Tiger & Panther from the Germans in response, which ultimately turned out to be mistakes.

It popularized many concepts along the M4: small fast light tanks with flat treads, easily produced/repaired tanks, multiple accessories and customization for the chassis for SPG or transport, snokels for going underwater, low target profile etc.

Their effectiveness and the failure of German's heavy tanks led to the main battle tanks of today.

The german command found the panzer 3s & 4s ineffective against the T-34 which is why they made the Tiger and Panther, dude.

T-34s are far more easily repaired and replaced than the panthers and tigers due to the huge supply of parts and the simplicity of the design and operation.

Because of their mass production, T-34s and Shermans see a huge variety of different chassis just like the panzer 3 & 4s do, but better.

Heavies weren't useful, that's right. The Germans' focus on heavy tanks meant they win 1v1 in a straight tank fight but they never get the 1v1s they want.

Which is why the MBT concept was invented to be a medium tank that is as fast as a light tank yet armoured enough to survive a shot or two. Heavy tanks are now extinct.

Why can't you be a wehrboo just because people rattle off facts?

Nobody said german tanks absolutely sucked. The panther is a good tank if the nazis were actually winning.

It just sucked because they lost the air war, they get all their factories and mines bombed so they can't make as many as they wanted, and tank crews whose rides broke down in enemy territory often have to destroy their own tanks to avoid having them fall to the enemy (more an issue with the unreliable tiger II though).

It's just a question of quantity over quality.

The fact that T-34s were so easily produced is the main part of their advantage you stupid fuck.

It's called being cost effective. The T-34 is dirt cheap to make, but it's fast and maneuverable, it works well enough (and was almost impenetrable by early WW2 guns), literal untrained peasants could crew it because the controls were so simple, could start up in cold russian winter and was airtight so it can go underwater.

A panther is a better tank in terms of 1v1 but tank battles are never 1v1. Panthers also break down far more easily than T-34s, and a working medium tank will always beat a broken down/stalling/poorly maintained heavy tank. Also, more tanks supporting infantry on a wide front = more ground taken faster and easier. A panther/tiger II puts all your eggs in one basket.

Tanks vs mechs is just the /tg/ argument of fighter vs wizard.
Except that argument doesn't exist.
Sure we know that people clad in plate armor were bashing in each others' heads with war hammers and pole arms a few hundred years back. They were armored pragmatically and wielding weapons that were designed to do their job efficiently.
But wizards are fucking wizards. They don't just take the role of most devastating damage dealer, they tank hits like it's nothing too. They also are the best at stealth jobs and everything else besides.
Anyone who argues that mecha are ill-equipped for whatever role they are supposed to fill out on the battle field is missing the fucking point. They're mecha. If it helps you understand this better, when you see bipedal humanoid robot, just imagine it to be wearing a pointy hat.
Do you get it now?

>>143388652
But I said T-34 & the Sherman?

I focused on the T-34 because it showed a greater difference in design between Russia and Germany. Russia focused on making their tanks as simple as possible, to the detriment of quality. Germany focused on making each tank capable of killing many lesser quality tanks.

However, Russia can field far more T-34s than Germany can field enough quality tanks to stop. That's why the T-34 is one of the best tanks of WW2. It was cost effective, and its legacy was "macro > micro".
