It's likely a combination of things. Trying to write a lighter work one was one difference he cited early on. Less of a clear cut goal probably plays a role as well. Natsu's goal of finding Igneel wasn't the sort of thing that could be consistently worked towards by traveling from place to place. Sheer popularity of the series probably works against Mashima as well. Rave was successful, but nothing super remarkable to my knowledge. Fairy Tail on the other hand is a fucking huge franchise. One of the big supports for WSM, and as a franchise a source of income for a lot of people. That translates into a lot of pressure to keep the series going, even when he's getting burned out. It also translates into a lot of pressure to not do anything too drastic, or alienate too much of the fanbase for too long.
All in all, the result is something of a reduction in quality.

Lisanna: Damsel, constantly almost gets killed in order for to get other people attention, only thing she ever does is fight fodder no names with the rest of the guild of nobody's. Barely makes any interaction with Natsu ever and even sees Lucy as her replacement while accepting it.

In all honestly, the Spriggans were mostly blind followers of Zeref(which we pretty much seen over and over it's gotten boring). The fact that Brandish at least questions the real reason to why they're are doing this knowing Zeref's going to kill a lot of people as well as try negotiations with others gives a better impression.

So even if Ivan did the magic most likely to fill the Lacrima came from Makarov.
Lacrima have whatever magic they are filled with, so you need a magic source that has the corresponding element.
