If they're cutting out the lost children how are they going to justify Guts getting captured by Farnese's crew?
The reason he got captured was because he was already so fucked up from the mothgirl fight, and there's a whole plot point later on that he cuts through them like butter when he's not injured.

I've been reading this manga since before you learned how to type.
Guts HAS developed a bit past this point, but it's generally been smaller stuff than what happens in V17. He has a bit of introspection when forming up with Farnese and Serpico, but it's mostly just rediscovery of previous character elements than actual development.
Plus, he's been a cardboard cutout for the last 4 volumes, and the last 8 years if you discount two fucking scenes in V37 and V33.

Kentaro Miura is frozen in utter shock at how horrible the episode was. Internally he regrets not challenging Itagaki on some of the things he was worried about.
Later on after everybody's started drinking, Itagaki attempts to explain his newly minted bowel movement as "bold" and "extreme", "stylistic". No one looks like they know what's going on, and they all look like they're about to start pointing fingers.
But that's just my interpretation of this footage, I wasn't there.

On a different topic, it feels strange to be so near the goal of 'helping' Casca (I really doubt healing her mental state and making her face all the shits that's gone down and being currenty doomed to literal hell, if they even succeed, is actually going to end well - it would be a hard sell in more optimistic stories) and yet so far. It seems so very close in the manga, yet we know it's going to take actual years to get there.

If the source of Guts' anger is taken away or healed to a degree, by returning the love of his life to him, Guts' usefulness to Skull Knight drops by a wide margin.
