Can we talk seriously here about how badly written it truly is?
Mai wasn't supposed to be shipped with anyone. Her character simply doesn't feel right being part of any romance. It is like bringing an Amish to the Silicon Valley or watching hentai with your mother. Pairing her with Trunks makes zero sense and they made it even worse by having her alt.future self also be together with him too. Toei was right when they removed the romance angle from Super, but Toriyama had to go full shipping mode and force it down our throats. I don't like it when people say Toriyama is a senile old man, but can I really blame them now?

Romance in real life doesn't make any sense. But trunks has always been my favorite character, and i have to say it makes the plot alot more entertaining. Plus, i think it gives the character motivation. Goku just likes being strong, Vegeta just wants to beat Goku, and now Trunks not only wants to protect his friends and prevent his fucked up future, but to save his love. He's like the only character whos shown any romantic feelings. I think its a good change of pace.

That's likely going to be the entire point of DBS: Goku becoming impossibly strong and coming to realize that he'll have to stop fighting some day. Throughout Super they've been building to this with the SoL episodes where Goku is either being reminded of his age and other responsibilities, be it Vegeta chiding him for acting childish, despite his age, Piccolo or Kuririn harping on old days, Chichi bitching about him not setting a good example for his grandkid or Goku himself feeling like an old man finally, when his ki control went out of whack, after being reckless with his body. After this arc and maybe one more Goku will likely start pining for a student of his own to teach, after the omni-king's tourney, even if it's under the guise of his usual selfish need of facing a potentially strong opponent that he reared himself. The little scene with him gauging Future Trunks' strength could play into the DB- Epilogue Goku's narrative with Uub, since I find the idea of Goku and Vegeta just training and chasing Beerus/Champa/Whis/Backs forever just as shitty as the original epilogue go DB. To me, Goku finally settling down and wishing to be a teacher with students of his own after literally challenging the best from 11 other universes, should be a big enough adventure that you could have in the 10 year span before the epilogue, which DBS takes place in.
