What's the problem anyway, as long as you enjoy it.
It's not the best, but certainly is one of my all time favourite.
It does comedy and serious stuff really well, and there's not many anime which can keep their quality for 200+ episodes.
It suffers the same problem as any series that fucking long: It's tired and dry, and just wants to milk some more money before it completely dies.
Absolutely no series should have over 300 episodes, that's just plain retarded and blatant money-grubbing. Which is part of why I hate Gintama and series like it. The creators just don't give a shit about what they're making as long as they can keep their series going. They have zero love for what they make, and it shows. And I hate that.

There is no reason to believe that just because a series is long that the creators do not care about it or what happens with it. Sure there are some examples of when this happens but gintama is most certainly not one. It is also consistent in quality for the most part and is still very enjoyable to watch.

If you actually knew Gintama you would know it has gone on for breaks every once in a while (ie. they actually don't do anything in order to keep it on air) and it's an episodic comedy with very short story arcs compared to other long-running shounen series.
Even without watching/listening to various cast and staff interviews the love of creators is extremely obvious from the over-the-top production of various serious and parodic scenes (most obvious being the Renhou arc).

I don't deny I enjoyed it about three times more after learning Japanese, listening to Sugita on radio and watching GCCX and loads of random variety shows, but that applies to almost all comedies popular on /a/ (eg. Lucky Star, Seto no Hanayome, Milky Holmes, and at the very 3DPD culture extreme: Tentai Senshi Sunred).
What really matter is that their own material featured through unique setting and characters is funny enough to make them watchable for any viewer with actual sense of humor; the references are just the icing on the top and some series doing it better than others (some integrate references into great gags while others have random stuff written on backgrounds).

Ya'll niggas just read the mana, i read it and didn't anime, because the tl in the mangas wrote notes on what was going on i was able to understand most jokes aside from some higher level puns or metaphors.
