I STILL don't know how to feel about this anime. My friend thinks its amazing but I don't share their view. I disliked the storyline and I wasn't personally impressed with the characters but the videogame-esque battle sequences were pretty cool. I don't think I was the intended audience.
Yes and no. The story begins to focus in on some core characters and concepts that you might understand/enjoy in the first season, but the chances are you'll still be lost in the big picture. There's a lot going on in Horizon and if you're willing to look into it outside of what the anime offers you might by satisfied.

It was one of those shows I found I didn't much enjoy the first time I watched it because I didn't really know what was going on. But then, a year later I rewatched it because I was bored and found out that I really fucking enjoyed it a lot because suddenly I had a much better idea of what was happening.
Up to you if you wanna stick with it or not. I think it's worth it, but some people don't.

The hardest fight though is when blue fights blue (I think it's in the first season) and you can't figure who's who, but every other fight they're different colors so it's not an issue.

Pretty much this. Kawakami spares nothing in catering to his preferred audience -- if you love mountains of high-quality worldbuilding, ultra-detailed gimmick fights, badass negotiations, loads of excellent characters, both comedy and serious moments in spades, and liberal use of world history, this is basically the perfect series. Oh, and the skintight bodysuits are a plus, too.
If the idea of keeping track of a dozen factions with a dozen characters each terrifies you, or you think something on the level of Game of Thrones or Baccano is too complicated, you should stay away.

I watched the series when both seasons aired and the weekly and ocasional Kawakami threads helped me get through it.
It's pretty interesting but you really need to understand the background and the prequel (Owari no Chronicle) first.
Back when it aired (like 6 or 5 years ago) there were some documents around the internet explaining the universe and OnC novels , lot of time has passed but you should try to find them.
I liked this series so much that my desire to read the novels made me start taking japanese lessons.

I didn't really get it on my first watch either. It wasn't until I started it all over a year or two later that I actually started comprehending what was going on. Reading the novels further improved my experience.
It's a series that feels kinda hap-hazard and runs at a seemingly madcap pace, but is rather rich and interesting if you get really invested. Whether you think it's worth the effort is entirely up to you, though.

I was in the same position as you not too long ago, and some kindly gentle/m/en directed me to this blog, which explains a lot of the setting and character conceits in layman's terms, as well as explaining the events of individual episodes. I found it a very useful aid for getting into the swing of things, and I'm rather enjoying the series now that I have.

I think it's because the series has its focus at that point. Before it was just all sorts of disjointed stuff happening in this confusing setting, but after Horizon is detained the series becomes about the class trying to save her, and even after the actual rescue that's still kind of what they're trying to do by gathering the armaments, and working off of that as a basis it's easier to understand the political events because you can view them in relation to that.
