It's easier to draw, don't look bad, and it might be to not make them look like some weird ass smiley. Try to ''connect'' those lip lines, and it will often look ugly. The middle of a real mouth would have something a bit pouty-like thing there. Skipping that with just a straight like looks bad, but just fading the middle place with skin-color makes it better.inb4 autism

therefore, when you draw the mouth, you gotta insist on the corners rather than on the middle of the mouth.
This helps simulate the thickness of the lips and makes the mouth look "more closed" than if you drew a continuous line.
Of course it's very stylized at this point but that's how it fucking works. If you don't realize this, you're probably the kind of guy who thinks that drawing people with two identical feet is better because all the toes are visible.
