I don't think CA are calamities either but rather a product of their influences tied down into that primitive state. Once they get out of DC I think the restraints that the calamities impose weaken and they become more emotionally complex.
Same with Nanika and Alluka's coexistence. I think that although Nanika appears to be a horrifying existence it (s)he is immediately humanised.
However I do think that the patch of land that the humans inhabit away from DC is actually part of DC and humans are the fifth calamity.
