I get that Machi detested what Yoshio put her through, but overall I got the sense that what might have fucked her up are the villagers. I get the feeling that they were the ones instilled with this xenophobia towards city folk, and they inculcate the children with that too. Not to mention they are pretty backward-ass; they idolize a bear. Machi's social anxiety was probably a combination of the villager's collective fear of outsiders, Yoshio's aggressive tendencies to push her into uncomfortable situations, and Machi's own insecurity due to ignorance (being a miko, she is probably the one person that had the least time to look into city life, and Machi was too proud to ask Natsu for advice, and Natsu was too condescending and then started praising Machi's failures as success).
The last few moments were too hard to watch. Best episode was probably 1.

Her anxiety is pretty understandable given that. It must be only once in a blue moon that she steps on paved ground, let alone in the company of more than a dozen other human beings, and that's the only life she's ever known.

There's no reason to suspect this. Kumade will pay her way and she's essential to their village's secret worship. Further she gets on fine with the village and has all the skills required to live the way she had been. She's REALLY quite effective at it. While she's inadequeate at using rice cookers she's hypercometant at chopping wood and cooking traditionally.
