Maybe I'm biased because my dad is a ceramics engineer, but tile is fucking amazing. They even have tile with the look and texture of hardwood floor (for a fraction of the cost, maintenance, and way easier repairs). Pic related.

They even have devices which go under the tile and can be set to keep it warm. You can have a path from your bedroom to the bathroom which is heated internally so your feet stay toasty even in the dead of winter.

As far as I can tell, in my own travels and travails, it's pretty much home-by-home. Even in my own house, we didn't habitually take our shoes off indoors until we got new carpeting. But even then, we don't ask, nor expect it of guests.
I remember at one childhood friend's house of mine, they did indeed insist that we take our shoes off when we came in. I always found it a little strange, to be honest. The mother was something of a neat freak.
I think the gist of it is that in America, taking off your shoes is somewhat synonymous with being a houseguest. If you're taking off your shoes, you don't expect to leave for a good while. Keeping your shoes on is a sign of transience.
The thing that's probably most peculiar to Americans though, as well as some other Westerners, is the concept of guest slippers. Americans often consider feet to be inherently dirty, and so they wouldn't want guests to be sticking their feet in something they own. It's a fairly common gag in Western animation for someone to take off their shoes, only for others to tell them to put them back on because they can't stand the odor. I have no idea if that's the result of Westerners historically wearing closed and insulated boots, which cause feet to sweat up, whereas the Japanese traditional footwear is the open geta sandal, but for whatever reason, such is the way those two societies have developed.
I fully admit to wearing shoes indoors and there is nothing any of you can do to stop me.

Coincidentally this is one part of my life where I have no idea what to do. I go to the shower after I work out and I have to take my socks off. I usually just use my towel to wipe my feet clean before putting them back on and wash that towel same day, but it's a little uncomfortable still.
