7 Reasons Why Core is Shit, by anon. Hope you enjoy.
>1. Vague/overly-simplistic/incorrect definitions.
These cards are not the majority but Core is known not to be 100% accurate.
>2. Useless katakana words that any English speaker would already know.
ズボン is not from English, and スタイル does not mean "style" even if Core says it does, thus words like these are good inclusions. Words like レモン and ミーティング are not.
>3. Hiragana-only vocab.
The vocabulary for "comb" is in Core as くし. But when you boot up Hanahira for your first reading practice ever, you will find that it is written with the kanji 櫛 and you will not have any idea how to read it. Learning anything kana-only besides certain animals, plants, foods, and beginner vocab like なに and どこ is a fool's errand because you will come across the kanji version eventually.
>4. Newspaper words.
Core was made using newspapers as a base, so many of the words you learn in 2k/6k will not be immediately useful to you when you begin reading.
>5. Learning tons of special readings right at the beginning.
The vast majority of Japanese vocabulary is actually pretty easy to understand. When a kanji is on its own or with okurigana, the kun reading is used, i.e. 話す. With other kanji in jukugo compounds, the on reading is used, i.e. 電話, 会話, 神話. But with Core, it shoves tons of beginner-screwing special readings in your face right off the bat. 一日, 七日, 九つ, 土産, etc.
>6. Out-of-context abstract vocabulary.
Learning something like 犬 (dog) out of context is fine. This is true for most physical nouns and many verbs. But when you are learning words like 産業, 職業, and 企業, it is very difficult to grasp the real meanings through rote. This also segues into the final point:

Good points. The last one is the biggest problem with Core and a big part of why I stopped using it. The so-called "optimised" order, I found, actually made it harder for me to learn words, because groups of words all written with the same kanji are inevitably going to have some overlap of meaning in many cases, which makes it very easy to mix them up when you encounter them one after the other with no context.
It got to a point in Core where I had learned "this is one of those cards that I always mix up", but for whatever reason I couldn't seem to learn to stop mixing them up.

I haven't been writing long, but I already feel like it has done wonders for me. Kanji make so much more sense visually now.
I tried learning them through vocab at first, but it just wasn't working for me. At best I was just learning the general shape of the kanji I encountered, but that wasn't enough to avoid mixing up similar ones regularly, and I even found that I wasn't able to recognise words that I supposedly "knew" properly outside of Anki because the smaller font meant that the shape of the kanji was obscured so I couldn't recognise what it was.
Here's my (for now) rather pathetic kanji grid, because why not. I did a radical deck (which I'm still reviewing) before this, but it wasn't until I actually started using the radicals to write kanji that I feel like I got any benefit from having learned them.Just 5 months left until the whole thing is coloured in! :^)

Well, according to jisho 一日 is pronounced as ついたち in the sense of 'first day of the month' and いちにち in the sense of 'one day' (but also in the sense of 'first day of the month'). In this case 'one day' would seem to make more sense than 'first day of the month'.
(Incidentally, fun factー ついたち is etymologically 月(つき) + 立ち).

Core will only take you so far, and even then it's really not very far. Most people here don't even do it past the 2000 word mark.
The alternative to Core is simply reading. Most people also mine their own deck from what they read (i.e. create an Anki deck from the unknown words they encounter while reading), but there are a few people who don't do Anki at all because they believe that simply reading (A LOT!) acts as spaced repetition on its own (when you see a word while reading, you are for all intents and purposes reviewing it).

Don't forget that many of these people also think guessing the meaning of the word based on context is the proper way to learn, because all language is "made up" anyways or something. There's mental gymnastics involved to justify shortcuts.
The "just read" meme only works if you actually review every word, and read with understanding. It won't just come naturally, you have to put in hours of work.
The benefit of core is that all that work was put into finding words already; the benefit of self-study is that you can learn the things that interest you instead, though you remain ignorant of everything outside your porn games and Goku-speak.

What makes you think that I don't read books? I read a lot of books. I just haven't attempted any Japanese books since I'm obviously new to the language. I just finished 'Valis' by Philip K. Dick and have been reading 'The Oresteia' by Aeschylus.

I agree, but many in these threads also think reading the Anki sentences are a waste of time, even though it's practically necessary to understand the nuance of why one word is used over another.
Anki lays a foundation for further study. I end up bookmarking nearly every word for later to write down once, and if I can't use it in a simple sentence, I look up example sentences on Jisho to see it in context - otherwise, it'll always be forgotten and relearned if I only encounter it every few weeks in Anki.
The feeling that my vocabulary pool far outstrips my ability to produce sentences is a bit defeating, unfortunately, but I just don't have enough time to devote to maintaining this progression Anki while also studying production. There really should be a way to pause/suspend an entire deck, even if that does defeat the whole point of spaced repetition.

No. Lack of kanji is a bad thing when you are just starting out. Words are easy to look up IF you know where they start and end. Which is a lot harder to tell if you dont have kanji.
I recommend against starting out with soething that doesn't have either furigana (thus kanji, but also the readings) or text format/text hookable format

core never fails to seem like it's attacking the issue from the wrong angle though
all the words it includes are, as the name suggests, common and it will not actually take over a decade to absorb all of them through reading if you forego doing the deck
i'd rather just use the fucking dictionary in the process of reading than spend an hour a day drilling it into my head for later use
