How did anime fandom exist prior to the internet, fansubs, matroska files, etc? Did people just watch officially licensed dubbed VHS tapes all the time?

For example, pic related was huge in Japan in the 90s but didn't air in the US until the early 2000s on Toonami and dubbed in English. Was there just a decade where nobody in America knew about it or were there other means of acquiring anime?

More or less. You have those VHSs in those mom and pop stores, with all the cheesy lines, westernization and cuts made for American audiences. Also porn sometimes.

This might be hard for the modern /a/non to understand, but you actually needed friends to fully submerse yourself in an anime fanbase back in the day.

VHS fansubs did exist, you know.

and the fansubbed VHS tapes.

and YYH did air before toonami. It first got shown when Adult Swim started their saturday block with Tenchi, Gundam 0083, Outlaw Star, and Pilot Candidate.

But it stopped right after the Four Saint Beasts arc and didn't progress until toonami got it.

We watched Toonami

It was the golden age

I remember the international channels back in the day would occasionally play some of the more popular anime at the time subtitled.

This was rare though, and usually alongside other stuff.

VHS subbed copies.

Paying 30+ bucks for like 2 episodes was not fun

you faggots have no idea how good you got it

Me and my friends would buy anime from a place called Suncoast to buy anime VHS, and loan the videos out to each other over the weekends.

I had Akira, Ranma 1\2 OVA2, The Guyver Vol 1-6, Wicked City, MD Geist 1 and 2, Fist of the Northstar, Sonic the hedgehog OVA, Vampire Hunter D, Guyver: Out of Control OVA, Dragon Ball Z(the one with Garlic Jr), Battle Arena Toshinden, and Fatal Fury OVA 1-3.

Anon>>143184012 here again.

I first came across anime at my uncle house, back with satellite tech was just a rather new thing. There was a channel called Network 1, and I would watch Zillion, Golgo 13, and Crying Freeman on it.

Also paying for VHS back then suck, a 30 min tape would cost about 20-25 bucks, and they would sale out quickly, so you might have to wait nearly a month before it was restocked. Do you remember how many VHS there was for Lodoss War and EVA? Holy Shit!

I managed to record Lodoss, Iria and Odin off of Sci Fi network

How fucking new are you that you've never heard of VHS fansubs?
>>
>>143182961
I was just a little kid in the 90s so I wouldn't know.
>>
You grabbed foreign language tapes (thanks South America for all your weeb love) made friends with people who apoke those languages, or learned them yourself. Or got tied into the underground subbing scene.
>>
fansubbed bootleg VHS senpai

had to trade tapes with friends or people on the Internet

i still have some. popular series like yyh and dbz weren't too hard to get a hold of

Bought VHS tapes from Suncoast here too.

Anime today might be mostly hot garbage but there's no way you can't appreciate how good video quality and selection is these days (and piracy for that matter, especially coming from when hard disks were tiny and to keep things around you had to constantly burn episodes to 700mb cdrs).

To be fair, it is 2016. VHS fansubs are a gigantic thing of the past. Hell, people don't even remember a time before Crunchyroll and hour later subs, you think everyone remembers VHSs?
>>
>>143184253
I'm 22 and I've only been moderately interested in anime since about 2011.

You save a huge amount of money too. I watch 80% of my anime on the net, the other 20% are anime series and OVAs that I own because I really like them. I have a soft spot for the Cyber City Odeo and The Guyver(80's series). I got my hand on Megazone 23 and Samurai Troopers at Animazement last year.

>Subs get delayed for a few days
>Fans bitch
