When I was a kid It was all pokemon and dragonball. Digimon and sailor moon lasted much less on tv while naruto and yugioh lasted like a season before getting canceled. One piece was far more long lived than both of them combined and they barely made it to alabasta.
Old anime were much more popular than newer series actually, in spite of pretty much everything getting dubbed for the vhs market anyway.
Lupin, City Hunter, Ranma 1/2, Saint Seiya all marked my childhood much more.

Though, to be fair, Naruto was more of a stint in my early teens than a childhood thing. Still I've come to see everything I did under the age of 16 as a part of my childhood so I think it still counts.

People act like they had always "good taste" and always knew what makes a good anime. That is bullshit. Taste is something you develop not you just have. Just like your taste of wine or beer. You have to taste hundreds of wines before you can understand what makes a good wine. Some is with anime.
Especially as kid when you care much about epic fights and monsters than a good story. And these kinds of anime where basicallly the only ones a kid could watch without an internet connection.
