nah, nigga. Goku and Vegeta are responsible for Buu getting out. Vegeta wanted to measure dicks at the worst possible time, and Goku didn't just bust out SSj3 and get it over with. They fucked up.
That final battle was them fixing their own fuck up. Having Gohan and Gotenks kill Kid Buu would show that they can't even take responsibility for their own actions.
And then, after that, Gohan got a family, and Goku and Vegeta were alive, and Goku got Yemma to reincarnate Buu as a good guy super fast. No need for Gohan to take his father's mantle.

We don't know what all was in the draft (that Toriyama wrote), and we don't know what Toyotaro and Toei made up themselves.
The fact that the two versions are so different makes it seem like Toriyama left a lot of blanks for them to fill in.

Remember that whole speach Vegeta gave at the end of the Buu saga? That's pretty applicable to Gohan too. The difference between Goku and Gohan is that Goku doesn't just fight for what he believes in, or fights to defeat evil. Goku is constantly pushing his limits, fighting uphill battles, and striving to be the greatest. He's the kind of guy who could look at a "GOD" and say "Hey, wanna fight?".
Toriyama mentioned during the Buu saga that he realized that Gohan would much rather be a student and a "normal" guy than Goku 2 and so in the Buu saga he portrayed him more like that. Gohan has a strong sense of justice, for sure. But for him to be happy would be to settle down and have a family. Meanwhile Goku is happiest when he's punching people. And that's the difference between them.

If you're still butthurt about that, I'll have to Remind you Vegeta brings up "I'm still gonna surpass you" at the end of the Tankoban, from like...the 90s. Vegeta understands why Goku's stronger, now. He understands what Goku's drive is, and why he always seems to overcome all that comes his way. That doesn't mean Vegeta doesn't want to become stronger still. I don't know why people assume Vegeta's going to stop trying to get stronger than Goku just because of that scene. Vegeta's just humble enough now to say he realizes Goku is the strongest and should be the one to fight Buu.
