The first half of the original manga wasn't too bad. It didn't take itself too too seriously either.
The author let the popularity go to his head though, and it can be easily seen in the "stylistic" chicken-shit art and paneling that has become the current norm. The fact that he cannot go 3 pages without hamfisted symbolism is pretty egregious as well.
He seems to have forgotten all of his main character's motifs as well. The only reason I'm even still reading it is to shitpost.
