I find it so hilarious that official US dubs are perfectly fine with using terms like "Youmu" and "Kamui" when fansubs keep shitting out nonsense terms like "Dreamshade" and "God Robe" to try to taint the show with their stink. Combine that with gratuitous script-writing, nonsensical localization and asshole politics, it's like they're all racing to see who can become the next 4Kids first.

Talk about a complete role-reversal from the early days of fansubbing. I'm glad they're dying out.

The dubs don't always get to decide what to use. If the Japs say you're using Kamui in the dub, that's what you're using. Also, Kamui is a pun.

No wonder dubs have standards.

Youmu and kamui tell you nothing as a burgershit. Ideally subs would use the original word with a tl note, but the dub using them is just a sign of incompetence.

Yeah, it's a shame that nowadays you'll more likely have to rely on fansubs to actually get your anime translated.

Sometimes executive meddling can be the cause of the issue with official subs, though. CR actually translated this same thing in the exact same way as we did in the Luluco KLK episode.

Every name in KlK are puns. It doesn't mean any shit if they are translated or not. Also 'God Robe' is a literal translation of that specific Kamui and it is not wrong.

I dunno, if it really is a proper name and there isn't a good sounding alternative. You never know, English is filled with borrowed words, whatever it is might catch on.

I'm normally for translating shit, though.
>>
>>143132058
Do you even translate fantasy terms? Even in English, authors come up with the most inane sounding stuff with French, German, etc...
>>
Opinion of someone who doesn't know shit about japanese and has never translated anything. Senketsu is the uniform's name, like a person's name, nobody would translate it. Or do you want to see every character named 'Koyuki' renamed 'Little Snow'?. And kamui perfectly can and perfectly IS translated here. It's not someone's name so it's OK.So fuck off.

Oh? What if the name is a pun? What if the name has special relevance to their character, a joke or reference? The Japanese are well aware of these puns and name meanings. Are you SURE you don't want to have them translated so that people can understand them? After all, they're PERFECTLY translatable.

Also, Kamui is a proper-fucking-noun.

You forgot to quote Daiz.
>>
>>143136477

>>
>>143133679
"eoten" is a translation of the original language to English, staying as close to the original experience as possible.
"titan" is a localization influenced by executive meddling, striving for an experience as close to what executives think the west can handle.

would you want your fansubbers to censor fanservice or misogyny too, if the publisher says only Japanese people should be allowed to see that?
>>
On that topic, check this video out.

>Tsukino Usagi

Modern-day fansub logic: "Should be translated to Moon Rabbit because that's what it means in Japanese! Meaning is lost if you keep the name the same! I have insecurities about my own language and culture!!!"
>>
>>143136291
>Also, Kamui is a proper-fucking-noun.

Actually it's just a made-up common noun, as there are multiple of them in existence in the show's universe. And even if it was a proper noun doesn't mean it shouldn't be translated. In-universe terminology in general should rather be translated, especially when it's clearly made up of existing words or word components.

Or would you really rather have "translations" like this: Kyoukai no Kanata is a show with youmus using youryoku to make youmutsukis to avoid ikaishis working for the ikaishi kyoukai who are using their inouryoku (that consumes their reiryoku) trying to banish the youmus to ikai.
>>
>>143136468
I liked godrobes. I didn't like the oversilk or whatever, though.
>>
>>143136699

Names are usually kept the same though if it's an abnormal pun localizing as something near equivalent is acceptable.

Subs having weird sounding things is less jarring than dubs having weird sounding things. Most people watching subs are probably in the process of whether actively or passively following the actual spoken words and having gay shit like romaji assists the progress of no one.
>>
Guys, there is basically zero reason to keep Japanese names intact save for your own stubbornness and weebness. People might start to have a mental breakdown if they see anything unfamiliar and it's the job of fansubs to prevent that.

Seriously though, simplifying things that aren't even Japanese to begin with pisses the shit out of me when it comes to inane translation choices. The fuck are we, retarded? No need for condescension, thank you very much.
>>
>leave senpai untranslated
>leave out honorifics because they're too weeaboo
Fansubber logic thread?
>>
>>143136699
Are they real names? Real names should generally be kept, but you should look it on case by case basis. If understanding the name is important to understand the plot, things should be done to make sure the audience gets this in some way. Don't know if there is a best way, but for example translator notes, translating the name, adding a middle name with the same meaning, or just something to make sure people understand.
In the case of Usagi, it's unimportant, and should be kept. The moon connotations to her are kept from the first episode, with her powers being moon based, Luna and possibly more. And Usagi means nothng at all, although I think the German dub changed her name to Bunny, but it's pointless, especially in a sub, more acceptable in a dub.
Unless rabbit has some deep connotations in Japanese mythology? But that's not something people are going to get anyway, so just explain it in notes on the website or a blog or something, for people who want to look at things really deeply.

An example of a name that should be translated would be Ahiru, which should absolutely be translated to Duck. Because it's not a real name, and it also helps group her with other animals, like Cat, it shows she's not a regular human, which could be misunderstood if the name is not translated.
>>
The official localization of Katanagatari translated "Deviant Blades" as "Klesha Bringers".
>>
>>143136699
Tsukino Usagi is a proper noun. Youmu and kamui are common nouns, so they should be translated.

Oh, sorry. It depends. I think it should be done by feel. Sometimes literal translations, or even vague translations, don't give the same feeling as the original Japanese. If the meaning isn't all that important, then I don't see why it would hurt to leave it as it is.
>>
>translating zanpakuto to soul cutter sword
>>
>>143140611
If the translation is awkward, and the exact meaning is irrelevant to the story, it should be left in as-is. If you can fit it, you can explain the meaning once when it's first used, or otherwise discussed.

>>
>>143143237
What annoys me most about Funi is they actually wrote it as Mr. Jiro and half of anons think his name is Jiro rather than Jirou or Jirō. Then we all ended up typing it differently. What's the reasoning behind their spelling choices? I'm not insisting they write Tokyo as Toukyou but I don't know why they do this for most other names or why they don't at least use ōs.

In Sansha Sanyō they're currently writing Youko as Yoko, Yuu as Yu, Kondou as Kondo, but they're inconsistently leaving Kou as is.
>>
>>143144343
Funi's target audience probably wouldn't know the difference in pronunciation anyway.

ou -> ow / you -> yu pronunciation convertion I think
Naked Kou doesn't convert so it's fine
Yuu looks awkward with double u but otherwise is okay, on the fence about that one
ō isn't used in english and looks out of place even when it's correct
Tldr it's an english phonetics thing
