Why did it have to quickly go to shit after episode 4 of season 1? If the series were popular I'd be able to read some good doujins of her being knocked up. But the doujins mostly suck...

J.C Staff's adaptation of the novels are infamously bad, but even so S1 isn't that bad and it has its good moments (example: flashback arc).
Unlike Nagi, Taiga, and Louise who have good porn, Shana is too pure and respectable to sexualize.

I like the explanation but to be fair the light novels weren't great source material either. Love triangles, 20 volumes of stretched out material when it should have ended sooner.

It's popular because of Shana herself is moe and an amazing character. The anime itself isn't amazing. To be fair, both season 1 and 2 suffers from having a slow and somewhat boring first half. Things pick up and get pretty awesome in their respective second half though. Season 3 when it all comes together for near non-stop plot and action on a global scale war on various frontlines, and it's also when MC becomes really badass.

The love triangle in the LNs did dragged out and was weak, but the plot is decent and most of the characters that comes and goes are interesting. The strongest part is certainly Shana's development and of course her cuteness through all the conflict and journey of self-discovery to be more human than an object made to carry out revenge.

Hm, I never picked up on that revenge plot. I do have the first light novel in Japanese it's hard to get into reading it compared to Haruhi or Toradora whose prose can make the mundane amusing.

You won't get that from volume 1. It takes a while for the plot and world-building to pick up. Basically, Flame Haze's existence is one deemed as tools of revenge by their enemies, and that's true since as Crimson Denizens took things (friends, family, loved ones, etc) from them before they became a Flame Haze. They form a contract with Crimson Lords in order to carry out their revenge. In return, Crimson Lords are able to use them as vessels to be their agent in the universe humans exists for the purpose of keeping balance in the world. Without balance to counter distortions made by Crimson Denizens devouring Power of Existence, the universe in which Crimson beings reside in will be in danger, so that's why they act in the human world.
Technically, Shana is an exception from this rule, but she is still raised and taught as a proper Flame Haze, so she emulates how Flame Haze acts and what they do. With Shana, there is no pretext or falsehood, she's very pure and sincere so to her there's no difference, and that's one major plot point in her development.
It's best to read what you can of the novels that have been translated and the manga along side it so you can visualize scenes and what characters look like. I don't recommend the anime, but it's still what most fans start from and it's not that bad to enjoy SnS in spite of the the numerous anime original context it has.
Try tracking down Zoetrope side story that's a prequel before the start of SnS. I personally think that's crucial to understand and appreciate Shana's character and development she went and will go through.

It's impossible for me. I'm a lolicon at core and rarely hold back to what I fap to, but Shana is one of the rare exceptions. Her pureness exists in many forms and the sincerity is utterly genuine. It's strong, but delicate and needs to be kept in stasis (rather than protecting) to keep her flawless and perfect.
I liked how MC didn't give a shit and just wanted a world where he and Shana could live at peace and love each other.
Not some weak ass bullshit character who can't decide what to do but somebody with a clear objective who will go through everything to make it happen.
Shana is also amazing.

Well, most Denizens are evil. Bal Masque is a different case in that they are an organization with an objective in mind with a leader under them. They are in the grey area since they do evil things that they deemed necesary or are justified. Each Crimson Lord them their own personal motives, but all of them, out of free will and respect, wish to serve under Sairei no Hebi in order to achieve a dream they all believe in. To them, it's justified for their cause that's the greater good. Flame Haze also in the grey and some of them are extreme enough to do bad things, but for all intent and purpose they are seen as good since they fight to avoid the destruction of the world.

I actually like super social extroverted (genki) characters normally more but Shana is an exception.
And during Shana I found out about Corticarte (Polyphonica)
My 2 very favourite tsunderes.
I hope I'll be able to enjoy like I could a decade ago soon.
