90% of the ending was cute and fine. I guess the rock throwing delusions were to far but I don't think that ruined it.
That last couple of minute were adorable.

I was starting to feel bad near the end, but the Saito-san part was so fucking cute, it made me feel that Machi is better off this way. I'm so sorry.
I don't understand any of the parts about rocks
I get that people here identify with Machi, but they're being too harsh, and also blind in regard to her qualities.
Despite failing hard, Machi always tried her best.
Also, she's a beautiful badass miko, can chop wood and cook rice at the fireplace. Yeah, maybe the scripting has been a bit sloppy in the end, but I wouldn't consider her "broken". It's a matter of perspective.

After going back to the village, she told Natsu that she gave up on going to the city (after all her previous failures), and both of them continued living happily together.

Because a part does not make a whole. Even that image with the Nico ratings for episode 11 showed that 60%+ of the watchers in there loved it, 18%+ found it okay, and the rest had a neutral to bad opinion of it. That's still the majority.

The whole idol shit was original. The actual ending scene was like 1 single page in the manga in which Machi woke up from a nightmare, which is basically a completely different situation. Basically they fucked up. The nips loved it until a few episodes ago then once they hit anime original territory they strongly disliked it. The ending did not help.

You could say it was the same thing, since Machi woke up from the city nightmare in the anime too. Or if you don't want to be that deep, you can just look at those two pages as part of Machi's and Natsu's daily lives, and since they were adapted in the end they prove that they both went back to living as usual. Nothing to do with mind breaking or becoming a braindead retard holy fuck.
The problem is the lack of catharsis.
I could accept Machi giving up if for example, they shown us Natsu begging her not to leave him or something.
If the aim of the show was to boost the manga's numbers this ending might actually be brilliant.
End the anime by breaking the cute miko, so people have to switch to the manga to get the old Machi back along with a literal "it was all a dream, don't worry lads" scene to erase what happened.

Most of them left by the halfway mark when they realized the show wasn't going to change.
I read the manga first, I laughed in the beginning of the series and called the people getting buttblasted over the bullying and sexualizing stupid, but as the series went on, I stopped laughing. Compared to the manga, the anime started really dragging out the bullying scenes and making them more graphic. In the manga they're much more brief and played off as a gag. And then they tried to force in this idol crap into it as an overarching story when it was barely brought up in the manga. And then these past couple of episodes with that ending where machi actually starts hallucinating and believing people were throwing rocks at her and giving up on her dream was just over the top.
The manga does a far better job of playing it off as a joke.

And now that I think of it, the people she's dependent on are also the people who want to use her.
The only people she's close to are Natsu, Yoshio and Hibiki. Natsu wants to keep her unable to do anything by herself, Yoshio only cares about revitalizing the village and while Hibiki does seem to care, in the end, she'll let Yoshio do whatever he wants. The people she's stuck being dependent on don't even really seem to care. Poor Machi, she didn't deserve any of this.

I agree that the anime original stuff was played pretty hard but it was something completely predictable. I saw the bullying as gags as it was obviously meant to be. Hallucination honestly does not feel too far-fetched for Machi since she has a very active imagination and she has been frequently possessed throughout the show which may have messed up her psyche.

Yep, that's important. If you want to promote a city you need to make the inhabitants pleasant in their portrayal. Drama is unpleasant most of the time and easy to make people look bad.
Yoshio recognizes the problem that the village is dying, and like a real tribal leader he comes up with the plan to sacrifice a maiden.
50 years from now, Japanese teenagers in a Fatal Frame game will go to the forgotten, foggy Kuma Village and be terrified by what appears to be a miko ghost haunting itbut it's just Machi and she's more afraid of them than they are of her

I'm a useless parasite to society myself and even I thought the ending was creepy. Becoming a leech should be voluntary, Machi clearly wanted to end her social anxiety but instead just ended up mindbroken. Loved the show though, strong contender for aots if it wasn't for the very last scene.

It should be iyashikei or healing. Comfy is a crossboarding meme that can mean basically any media you like to consume to relax and disconnect from your worries. Kuma Miko was clearly not healing from the beginning, unlike something like Non Non Biyori, which also had bullying, but balanced with nostalgia and bucolic bliss.

i only read the beginning chapters of the manga a while back but how come these threads are so depressing? is it just the adaptation or does the manga get like that as well?
It's AOTS for me. This had a little of everything and was done pretty consistently well in terms of writing directing and production. I know nothing of the source material so I don't know if it's a great adaptation, but the anime was by far the best for me this season.

Anime expanded on the idea o making Machi into an idol as an overarching plot, the miko/hick bullying got a lot more focus, and the last several episodes were almost entirely anime original with Machi going to an idol contest in the city and suffering extreme social anxiety which caused her to have delusions of mistreatment and completely gives up on her dream of going to highschool in the city.
The manga does not get as bad as this and remains a slice of life comedy with an awkward miko.
The ending was kind of expected, but did they really have to show mind-broken and lobotomized Machi with cute music playing, like if this was actually a good ending for her?
