I loved sabondy arc because you can see the entire credit trying so desperately hard to use the power of friendship to win and save each other from overwhelming power. They even get lucky and have one of the most powerful characters ever show up to give them a hand.
You can just see the despair dripping off their faces as they take turns sacrificing their life for each other or trying to buy that extra second to keep zero alive or risking their life taking that extra rumble ball to make sure no one else is hurt.
But in the end it's not enough.

I think Shinji kept himself safe by not getting too attached to world he lived in. Guts, on the other hand, had both close friends and a lover. He invested a lot in the life he led, emotionally speaking, so he had more to lose, which brought about more suffering.
It might be too much to ask for, but i hope Gut's crew ends up alright. He's finally forming bonds with people and it'll be painful to see his friends die again.
Shinji is what, 14? They've both been through hell but Guts has experienced much more suffering than Shinji has, 25+ years of living would do that.
