A show can be good for many different reasons. Visual direction is just one of many ways to make a show enjoyable. As an example, SZS and Monogatari were both made a lot more enjoyable by their visual direction; they would probably be a lot more boring without it. On the other hand, it's possible to make a show good without relying on visual direction. An example that comes to mind is Ping Pong. I know there are some fans of that artstyle as well, but personally I just found it disgusting. But despite that I could enjoy the series thanks to the characters and story.

I like atmosphere a lot more. I see pictures of that Re:zero show and hear how dark it is but its full of bright colors in every screenshot. Compare that to Madoka where as the show progresses you can feel the atmosphere almost closing in on you as the girls become more desperate.
