Now we're getting somewhere: the point is that in many shows, the people doing great things are ordinary guys thrown into extraordinary situations. Literally any /a/non could have been Shinji at some point. Shinji was not extrordinary in any way after all. Very often, the protagonists are designed in a way to be relatable to the audience. And this is not just an economic type of calculation - after all, the writers are likely part of similar demographics and thus prone to writing characters that resemble themselves. In male oriented romance anime it's not any different. You have protagonists with whom the audience can identify and thus is fuels their escapist fantasies of what it would be like to be in their shoes. What it would be like to be popular with girls, etc.; and the shows provide a setting for that, since the girls in those shows are clearly fine with dating losers.

One problem with a lot of those series is that it's extremely rare for the MC to actually be "normal", there's almost always some sort of bloodline or magical backdrop or something. I immerse myself in the stories, but for some reason I don't ever see them as "myself" so to speak. Granted we're talking about this but I don't read/watch harems all that often, at least not as the primary focus, cute girls are always a plus though.

That's a good point, but there's something important to note about it: these traits that turn a normal guy into someone supernatural are usually something that are unrelated to his personality. The protagonist is given powers by the plot. Whether it's Issei being turned into a demon, Araragi being turned into a Vampire, Shinji being born under certain conditions, and so on - still, it's nothing they gained on their own, it's something they were handed by the plot. This is very different from the protagonist being a martial artist who trained for all his life. These traits allow the protagonist to be relatable as a loser, while still do extraordinary things. The average viewer can imagine themselves in their position and think to himself: "If I were given their powers, I could be great too".
