All in all the tournament arc was fine, but the last two episodes were absolutely terrbile except for action scenes.

This is in some ways the worst battle school harem I've ever seen.
Sure, I've seen things with less production value, and worse execution, but the problem with Asterisk is that the core concept is fundamentally flawed.
Like in these wacky magic/robot battle school harem anime, the chunni crap is supposed to be the backdrop for the standard romcom/sol cute/funny character interaction bits.
Asterisk however seems to have the focus placed squarely on the chunni nonsense part, with the entertaining/endearing character moments being few and far between and lots of chunni-babble of universe magic terminology and fight scenes and backstory melodramatics.
I don't know who the fuck thought this was a good idea.

The battle academy 'plot' here is not strong enough to stand on its own; as in many similar shows. It is simply not that interesting. Harems are like sitcoms for a few quite laughs and awwws. When they try make them serious or plot centric, there better be a good enough plot to justify that or you end up with things like this.
I guess maybe there IS a niche for this; like I guess people who like sports anime could like this, but it's just such a strange divergence from what kind of template these shows follow; and sure innovation and new ideas are a good thing in general over time, but it didn't really work out in this particular case.

Well, I'm not sure what exactly they were going for, I guess my assumption was that was them trying to be serious and stay with the plot vs comedic harem antics/sol stuff.
I've just been finding the second season pretty tedious to watch; I don't really find the battles that interesting; sure they're animated fine etc... but like this is practically a series of shonen battles with less character interaction and comedy between the battles than in an actual shonen.
I really really don't "get" what they were going for; if you do, please enlighten me.
But like from my standpoint, it's kind of a tedious mess. It's like all the boring parts of other shows that thankfully made up the minority of screen-time in deference to the 'fun' stuff.
I don't HATE anime battles, I can really enjoy them where there is some context/stakes. I'm not going to deny the final battles in ttgl or fma:b OR snk (in space) even something harem-y like ZnT were exciting to me. But that's because there was context to the conflict, like there had been a lot of lead up to it, there were tangible stakes, character development to that point, etc...
Like this is shonen battle mentality; quick introduce and characterize these dudes for the battle of the week; this isn't even my final form, do it again next week.
I don't find that interesting; I don't think Asterisk is shonen targeted either; there is too much boring exposition.
I'm still watching it though; I'll probably finish it today what with the last episode. I'm no saying this is shit that should be dropped/not watched etc... I'm just saying it's some kind of incredibly weird show concept for which I can't image what the target audience must be.

Holy fuck that was a pretty good episode, especially the animated Hydra fight.
Then they played the first OP at the end, hype as fuck. It ended just as it was starting to get interesting.
Going to miss it really, it was a bit generic but the OST/OP/ED in general were stellar, plus it probably had the best world-building idea for a battle academy harem.

The entire montage was lots of training scenes and character sneak previews, it worked perfectly to hype up what's to come.

As far as I know, Claudia isn't strong in combat. She's weaker than Ayato and Kirin. Julis could probably beat her too. It's just that Claudia has precog that lets her see several seconds into the future, but her weakness is that her body still has to react and keep up with her future sights and opponents, and she's physically not that fast.

Among all the battleharems that season, Antimagic was the most atypical. If they'd had enough episodes to reach the volume where the witches and the inquisitors are fighting each other house to house in urban guerilla combat in the ruins of a dead city consumed by the Zone as both sides are stalked by an insane serial killer, that would have been amazing.
From all the discussion on how Asterisk was marketed it felt like a pure business decision where after so many succesess from making rehashes manangement felt they got their success formula down and thought they could make any series good. Which they picked Asterisk which the show was produced as a rehash of a source material which is a rehash of other battle harems. I thought I liked Asterisk but what I liked was how it played of the meme from Rakudai while having better art.
