And it turned into a shitfest, so shit Nasu had to post the epilogue on his blog because Ufotable didn't adapt it. In fact a lot of changes in the anime were Miura and Nasu had nothing to do with it.

I haven't exactly gone through with a fine toothed comb, but on a general sense, a lot is lost when you adapt a VN that is heavy on internal dialogue and narration to a medium that cannot use that very effectively.
The Archer vs. Shirou fight had to break into memories and metaphors in order to convey the internal struggle that both Archer and Shirou are facing, for example, which, while executed well, remains unfortunately heavy handed compared to it just being Shirou's thoughts on the matter directly given to the reader.

Honestly, if that was Miura's goal, I don't see how he attempted to make it a F/Z sequel. The anime is far too similar to the actual UBW route in the VN to have the same atmosphere as F/Z, not to mention the characters themselves are just too different for it to be a coherent sequel to that. I mean, you can't have such a crucial character like Kirei killed in such a sudden and off-beat moment as when Lancer stabs him. It works for UBW as a sequel route to Fate route, but as a sequel to F/Z, it's completely nonsensical because Shirou is Kerry's son and the rivalry/enmity between Kirei and the Emiyas should have gotten more focus.
Maybe that's because Nasu intervened heavily in the production process, but meh.

They completely missed any thematic metaphors with the fight. Shirou was supposed to throw away all skills and just keep swinging to symbolize he didn't care he couldn't win, fighting itself was enough. The anime instead goes for so much flash making him do backflips and deflecting giant swords that it makes it look like any "don't give up and you'll eventually win" fight of any battle shonen.

Probably all Miura meant was to acknowledge the obvious connections to Zero that new viewers would look for with things like the original Ilya scenes. He just wants to make it seem like Miura was trying to make Zero season 3.

Speaking of which, from the early meeting stages, Mr. Nasu was telling us flat-out that Shirou was a character who doesn't grow or mature. Of course, that's Mr. Nasu's particular style of saying things, but, speaking for myself, that left a profound impression on me. To restate it in our terms, he was saying that Shirou is such an unwavering character that you think never grows or matures. That's proven to be a crucial stepping-off point as I draw the storyboards for this series. When we have meetings with Mr. Nasu like that, one or two pearls of wisdom that leave an impression sometimes come out of nowhere. Seeing how a creator's mind works up close was really stimulating.
They should have just adapted the Fate route instead. Nasu could have rewritten the romance like he wanted to, and lots of little callbacks to Zero could have come up (ritual dagger used to kill Kirei, Ilya bringing up papa Emiya, Saber being motherly to Ilya, Saber getting a proper showdown with Gil that she was denied in Zero).

I think I expected a little too much from this adaption. Tapped out on the Answer fight and have lost all desire to continue. I still have high hopes for HF aka best route.

The VN never states Ilya had no magecraft training. It's the opposite in fact, Sella was Ilya's magecraft teacher, and Ilya was able to produce Mystic Eyes of Charm that she used on Shirou using her magecraft ability.
It was also a requirement for her to know a lot of magecraft (formalcraft (Makiri), elemental magecraft (Tohsaka), and alchemy (Einzbern)) for her to do things like the Heaven's Feel ritual, which is basically the Third Magic itself that uses the entire Grail system, so she had to know the Grail inside and out.

If it's at the land that houses the Holy Grail, then Ilya is indeed that strong. And being able to make a familiar from her hair was in the original draft. The work this time around was especially hard, so I ended up using an "Iri's replacement" approach. By the way, the name of the technique is Elfen Lied [German for Elves' Song, 天使の詩 - Angel's Poem]. The bird's name is Storch Fieseler [German term for a type of plane]. The Ibis that shoots bullets is Zahre (tear), and she can also transform them into an Épée (a sword).

Ilya does say she isn't a mage and knows jack shit about magecraft in one of her park necounters in Fate, I know she may just be messing around, but we never see her using any magic that isn't innare like her mystic eyes or the Heaven's Feel.

if you're going to accuse Mirua of failing UBW as a director, then point out specific examples how he failed. I can certainly agree that parts of the series could have been better handled with a different director, but you shouldn't leave it to our imagination what areas you consider directing poor. I think there are also points which showcase attention to detail and directorial talent. All of this criticism of Mirua lacks any weight without specific points with specific examples.

The anime is just "good" by itself. Which is a shame because the VN was beautiful. There's a lot of atmosphere missing in the anime, lots of mystery and intrigue gone. Hell you get to the horror like halfway through the second episode. In the VN you can spend like half an hour just reading through the little newspaper clippings that detail the previous murders. I believe in the anime that scene is like two seconds. It's a good anime but not a good adaption.

A problem I had was in the beginning of the VN I got to meet and grow attached to the characters and see what good friends they were. This all made the eventual tragedy hit that much harder. Instead in the anime they skip right to the horror as you said and miss out on growing any attachment to the characters.
