I might also remember some light dialogue implying he was on some kind of rest or break in the North Blue and intended to return somewheres in a short while.
Finding Luffy, a young boy with an extreme desire to be a pirate and have adventure could easily be the motivating power that pushed him back towards the Grand Line.
