It's a Miyazaki movie for sure, and Ghibli now owns the rights to it. But it was not produced by Ghibli. I think the movie gets over looked a lot because the manga is more complete and arguably a better story, since the movie came out before the mango was even finished. It is still great in its own right, though.

I don't think it was supposed to be as black and white as that technology is bad. Eboshi comes off as evil at first with her use of guns and mining of ore, but it shows that she cares about the lepers and whores who everyone else ostracized.

The only real villain was Jiko, since it was him who lead the hunt for the forest spirit. But he starts off shown as a good guy when Ashitaka first met him. I guess the no-name villains like the samurai and other hunters weren't shown to have redeeming qualities, but they weren't really characters and more of plot devices.
