What is that? Doesn't look like the autocannons from the modern-day Independence-class or Akizuki-class that we've seen in-show. They remind me the most of the 5"/38s in single-gun turrets from WW2-era American DDs, but the turret doesn't really match up either. The show hasn't really made up weapons up until now, so I suspect it's a real-life weapons system.
It appears their FCD got upgraded, too. In fact, it appears to be a version of the FCD mounted on the Fletchers at some point in time. So maybe those guns actually are 5/38s.

The turret's a bit different, but the main problem with it being that gun is that that gun was never placed in a turret mounting as seen in the PV. They simply had gun shields and were open and exposed in the back. I think the only turreted German DD guns of WW2 were the 6" guns.

The new FCS is the us Mk37 and the gun mount is the US 5"/54 cal Mk39 which were only fitted to the Midway class CVs AND-- the JMSDF Akizuki and Teruzuki the first destroyers built in Japan for the JMSDF in 1959/60

Mk 16 is the designation for the tube, Mk39 is the number for that mount.
The fully automatic Mk42 mount used that same tube. For that matter the Mk45 gun uses the same tube, its just that with it the Navy stopped distinguishing between the tube and the mount.
There is one Mk39 mount in service at White Sands. Its still being used to test new projectiles for the the 5"/54 and 5"/62 guns as its easier to load experimental projectiles with its old manual loading/power ramming than setting up a complete Mk45 mount with all its under-deck autoloading gear.

I feel like the number of characters is a weakness of the show. They should have put more focus on some 4-5 main characters and left the remainder of the cast largely in the background to do cute things to each other while the camera isn't looking.

I used to think something along those lines, but in the last few chapters I find they've given each character enough time to shine. I don't think they have more characters than they can handle.
Of course the show would also have worked with a focus on a few girls and their growing relationships, but I think the "smorgasbord of cute girls" format fits this kind of anime best, and they've done a good enough job.
This is a completely subjective perception, but since the thread is in need of a few bumps, I'll go ahead and say that haifuri is doing a better job of showcasing each girl than GuP did as far as I can tell.

Haifuri has no stakes. The entire central conflict of the magic virus was resolved on the side instantly without any of the characters having to do anything. We all know nobody is going to die, either, especially after magic airbags saved crewmembers from a direct hit. The girls are all extremely shallow and unmemorable, even background characters in GuP like Nina are more memorable than the average crewmember of the Harekaze.
Only reason to watch Haifuri is for CGDCT on a boat, everything else is shit.
You'd think that Moka and her little group would die of absolute boredom locked up in that little bridge for over a month.
