Why do people consider Fate Stay/Night a masterpiece?
1) It starts in the middle of a burned city, instantly hooking everyone who likes tension with no freaking build up. Hello, here’s a ruined city and everybody has burned alive. Try giving a shit about any of them.
2) What’s that, he was really lucky to be the only survivor? Right off the bat they are telling you he is plot armored.
3) Hey look at that, little children can choose if they want to go to an orphanage or be adopted by people they have never seen before. Who needs child support when democracy works with no age restriction? And for no reason he choose to go with a total stranger. Time to be sold in the black market, sucker!
4) Wait, first he agrees to go with a stranger, and then he is told that stranger is a sorcerer? Shouldn’t he be told that before he could make his choice? I mean, he sounds very excited when he hears that, so why make it seem like he chose what suits the plot instead of giving him a good reason to go with this guy? This is fucking stupid.
5) And the thing that makes this even more absurd is that all this time Shiro is dreaming his past. Who the fuck is dreaming his past? This was all a lazy excuse to show a flashback in a damn dream. And to top that, here comes our first glimpse of why you are playing a porn game. A cute girl comes to wake you up and then cooks you breakfast.
6) While you are undressing her with your eyes. Totally normal things that happen to all horny male teenagers who play porn games.
7) And if that is not enough, his own female teacher comes and goes in the house he lives, just so she can flavor the harem and offer some really uninspired comic relief.
Because philosophical word salad that amounts to Shirou being brave and having morals.

8) The rest of day 1 is Shiro going to the most boring of places, a fucking school, where we meet more boring archetypical characters, like a tsundere and a smart four eyes. He then goes home and we get this huge ass infodump about how magic works, which I fucking don’t care about, since I know they can rewrite the rules any way they like.
9) The next day the bland mc notices his waifu is being beaten by her one dimensional evil brother, so he vows to protect her like the harem lead he is. And of course he blames himself for everything because we need victimizing to replace relatability regardless of not making any fucking sense.
10) The evil brother bullies other students and even sexually harasses another waifu, so the harem lead has an excuse to be a boring white knight that only reacts to other peoples’ evil acts. He then goes the place the fire happened a decade ago where he says he doesn’t remember what happened. Which is bullshit since he clearly does in the flashback they showed right in the very beginning.
11) Edge, so much edge. And I still don’t care because I never saw those people. Stop making it seem like mentioning deaths automatically makes something sad. It doesn’t.
12) On day three shiro sees two heroic spirits fighting and is immediately killed as no witnesses are allowed. Don’t ask me how the magic association is going to cover this up. They just say a gas leak blows up houses and slices people to pieces. But who cares, the bland mc is dead and we can now focus on better characters.
13) Nah, who are we kidding, this is a shonen thing where they pretend to kill the protagonist but he never stays dead. Because people don’t die when they are killed, get it? And there is more, not only he magically survives for the second time, but also summons his own heroic spirit. Which of course looks like another waifu. Splendid writing.

14) After that, I have no fucking clue what is going on anymore. They spend hours in explaining terminology which doesn’t matter because it’s contradicted later on, and they don’t bother to simply clarify their motivations. Shiro summons a heroic spirit even when he has no idea how he did that. Lancer injures Saber but runs away even though he had the perfect opportunity to finish her off. Saber immediately attacks Rin even when she knew her abilities were locked away. Shiro tells Saber to stop fighting because cute girls are not supposed to be swinging swords. How chauvinistic is that?
15) Rin saves Shiro for no good reason and despite finding out he is the seventh master, she doesn’t kill him but instead spends hours explaining all the rules, not to mention being added to his harem. This is fucking terrible. The plot is just an excuse for the lobotomized protagonist to be constantly surviving, three times so far by the way, constantly infodumped, and constantly adding more bimbos to his harem.
16) And after two hours of boring exposition in a church, they are attacked by Berserker who easily defeats them and is about to kill them. But for no good fucking reason, his master tells him to stop and leaves. So Shiro survives for the fourth time because the script said so.
17) In the fourth day Shiro heals his otherwise lethal injuries thanks to Saber’s energy or some shit like that, even though he is the one who is supposed to be sustaining her existence with his energy. I don’t get it and the author doesn’t care. And the only thing they are doing is talking for 3 hours about more horseshit terminology. Then all the girls magically want to stay in his house, and Shiro acts like he is about to faint from fear for being so close to members of the opposite sex. Yup, this is totally a serious death game.

18) The entirety of the fifth day is a harem comedy of the most basic kind. All you get is misunderstandings amongst the girls and the school bully being envious of Shiro hoarding all the chicks.
19) During the sixth day, Shiro finds out the school bully is one of the masters. How convenient, now he has all the excuse to beat him up. He is no longer just a bully, he is a threat to his harem. By the way did you notice that out of the seven masters, three of them are teenagers going to the same school? Is there something super magical going on in there that creates so many masters? No it’s just bad writing. That’s why schools exist in anime, so major characters will be going to the same place every day just because.
20) And then he introduces his heroic spirit who, what a shock, is also a waifu. What did you expect, a properly dressed female in a porn game? Anyways, the bully lets him go, instead of killing him on the spot like he is supposed to. There is no reason for that, other than plot armor for the fifth time.
21) Speaking of plot armor, Saber gets into a fight with Assassin and is about to be killed, but Assassin stops and retreats because someone was conveniently spying on their special attacks. Lazy cop-outs are lazy.
22) After that, Shiro displays his chauvinism once again by claiming girls shouldn’t fight and men must protect them. Well done man, saying that to a heroic spirit that is a million times stronger than you.
23) This continues in the seventh day, where he insults Saber for not wanting to dress like a cute girl. Then he walks in the bathroom when she is naked, just so the otakus can jerk off to this done to death softporn cliché.
24) If that wasn’t enough, we then get some loli service where Ilya is playing with Shiro instead of, I don’t know, killing him so she can win in the death game or something? This girl’s useless, she’s not even trying to win.

25) And after Shiro doesn’t die for the sixth time, we then get some edge with Rin being a junkie. Ok, she is not actually doing drugs, she is making magic bullets by using her blood, which is also edgy!
26) Nothing to say about the 8th day, it was all slice of nothing ever happens instead of a death tournament. So skipping to the 9th one. The school bully finally tries to kill Shiro, something he could have done many days ago but didn’t because this porn game needed 2 days of harem comedy. And what a surprise, neither him nor his waifu spirit can kill him thanks to the magic of plot armor. Thus he doesn’t die for the seventh time.
27) Once Shiro and Saber counterattack, the school bully turns out to be a total wimp, so Rider helps him escape by using her super attack. An attack that activates by slicing her own fucking throat. Edge! And no, not even that was enough to kill Shiro for no logical reason, so he survives for the 8th time.
28) This battle took place in school where everybody had fainted and their skin was melting. But it’s ok, since magicians can fix everything and convince thousands of people it was all a gas explosion or some bullshit. And now we can forget them because they don’t matter nor we will ever see them again. Let’s go back home to have some more generic romcom shenanigans.
29) During the 10th day, Saber is revealed to be King Arthur… as a chick. Makes no sense other than much needed deviant fan service. How else could this game become so famous?
30) During the 11th day, Ilya captures Shiro but doesn’t kill him because he is special. Of course and he is, he is the harem lead! And thus he survives for the 9th time.
31) And here comes the lolicon fan service, as expected from a porn game. Such deep and thought provoking storytelling, unlike anything else out there.

32) Shiro escapes with the power of bullshit, but Saber is out of energy and the only way she can be recharged is by Shiro fucking her brain out. And that makes complete sense because you are playing a porn game.
33) After that, he creates a super sword out of thin air and along with his favorite cum bucket they kill Berserker. What a pile of bullshit. The 12th day is again wasted on romcom nonsense, with Ilya joining the harem and Saber losing all her badass attitude, effectively turning into a shy housewife. Because that’s what happens when women fall in love in porn games. They lose their balls and become lethargic house pets.
34) The 13th day is all about breaking every single one of the rules you wasted a dozen hours trying to make sense of. Saber is some sort of a special time traveler who retains her memories instead of a heroic spirit that forgets everything like everybody else. She is also an imperfect summon that can otherwise overpower perfect summons. Caster has the power of rule breaking when it comes to magic. Gilgamesh has a thousand noble phantasms instead of one. He is also breaking the rules by not returning to nothingness after the previous grail war was over. And the new grail war began much sooner than normal because the grail was destroyed, but not really. It makes no sense. And typically, Gilgamesh is not killing everyone even when he can easily do so, and walks away because plot armor. Thus, Shiro doesn’t die for the 10th time.
35) The 14th day is Shiro going out on a stupid date with Saber. Because that’s what you do in death games, when demigods are about to attack you at any moment. You go on dates. And who would have guessed, Gilgamesh appears, shows off his broken powers, and then leaves again without killing them for no reason. Thus, Shiro doesn’t die for the 11th time, returns home, and fucks Saber all over again. And if none of that made any sense to you, it’s because you are playing a porn game.

Such as choosing if they want to be adopted or disappearing by the dozens for over a decade without adults giving a shit about them.
37) Despite Lancer giving him a wound that cannot heal and Kotomine making him relive the pain of his childhood, Shiro doesn’t die for the 13th time just because. Furthermore, the only reason Kotomine has for causing the destruction that killed hundreds 10 years ago and wanting the grail in the present, is because it’s fun. Excellent writing.
38) Also, even if you get the grail, no matter what you wish it’s going to cause a big disaster as a mutual exchange. So the world is screwed regardless of outcome. Edge!
39) We are then told Shiro has super regeneration because his foster parent placed the sheath of Excalibur inside him. How the hell do you stuff such a large thing inside a small child without causing some sort of deformity? This is bullshit!
40) Anyways, they use power of love to create an attack more broken than Gilgamesh, and Kotomine gets killed like a rookie by a knife. The end, the grail is destroyed, nobody wins, Shiro survives more times than Berserker had lives, this porn game is horseshit, I have no idea why everybody calls it a masterpiece when most light novels are doing the exact same thing. If this is the best the medium has to offer, just imagine how worse the rest of them will be.

I recently rewatched Fate/Zero and that show really was something. Especially by anime standards, there was so much subtle detail and craft in places you otherwise wouldn't think to look when it comes to weeb stuff. It's still retarded, but it's the good kind of retarded that you can let by because you're having too much fun. That's how I feel about Type-Moon in general: distinctive, stylish, neat world-building and a bunch of neat, odd (by anime standards) characters interacting in neat, odd ways. Nasu is a hack, but he can tie together a pretty good story when he puts his mind to it.
Speaking a bit more about F/Z, the animation and character designs were spectacular. I don't know what the fuck happened with UBW. A lot of the profile shots and the like in F/Z showed a small bit of the eye behind the nose which added definition to the face, but in UBW they took that away (to save money? I have no idea), made all the character's jaws a lot rounder and as a result everybody looks like a fucking racehorse. Episode 3 looked fine, but just about every other one shat the bed big time character design-wise. But I'm probably just a massive autist.

Its because it was intended to be an rpg game originally and Nasu's focus on power level mechanics along with blatant waifuism and husbandos in various side stories, sequel works, and spin-offs that the series is so massive and such a huge commerical success.
