Rayearth season 2 had a lot of angst. Nobody ever compares it to Eva but they are strikingly similar. Hikaru and Shinji go through pretty similar struggles.

I loved season 2. It started a bit slow, barely anything happened in the first 7 episodes, but it turned out really great, a great second season.
