I was never big enough into it. I was even less big into it when they wasted 2/3 of the second season which can probably never be marketed outside of Japan now but was the first definite proof of what the modern era of Japanese anime was going to look like and just how gullible fanboys are so it's a historical series even still.

Both seasons were the earliest harbinger of what was to come in their own ways and what would eventually become not only okay but the desired form of the product. There's a reason people say the modern era of late night anime, light novel inspired writing sensibilities and moe waifus started with Haruhi. Stuff like Fate/Zero, Bakemonogatari and Madoka Magica kind of solidified what Haruhi jump started by adding the full on grimderp tragiporn angle to the mix as well as some frequently used plot ideas while also sharpening and nearly perfecting the asshole annoying character trend and everything since has been various reductions of the same "plot" formulas, annoying character types, aesthetics and overall ideas for the "Big" shows.
Anyway I still remember how low the quality of the Bandai discs were back in the day. Some of my Zeta Gundam DVDs no longer work and the boxset is only about 11 years old. Meanwhile a lot of my old SNES carts work fine and they're from the early 90's
