2 is a VR simulation with some of the worst cases of despair syndrome. It was meant as an attempt to reform them through the power of Hope, but the entire thing was infected by Junko's "surviving" AI who tried to pervert the whole thing to keep producing despair from the grave.
Monokuma's "sibiling" Monomi was designed as the overseeing AI while the sleepy gamer girl participant was a helpful AI "mole" agent to smooth things over.
The main character was by far the most ruthless monster of all, but ~amnesia~ allowed him a chance to choose a different way. All the people who die during the experience end up in a coma, while the gamer girl AI needs to die as a way to expunge the Junko AI. Everybody else escapes.

Probably two shows I'm most hyped about. I adore the series and can't wait to see it end, though the cross-media platform of the manga and these shows seem a little fishy. But I'll watch it regardless. I only hope Lurche has learned from the first adaption and how much of a disaster it was to stay in the exact same format as the game.

That case is dumb but not for the reason you're saying it is
The despair virus was pretty much just a big dumb red herring. Mikan getting her memories back was the VR world glitching, it was completely unintended. The dumb despair virus didn't even really need to be there.
Frankly if we're talking "insults to the mystery genre", in DR1 the villain having a secret twin who isn't revealed until near the end of the game who does a bunch of shit for Junko to explain away how the character did things is even bigger. Surprise twins that weren't mentioned earlier is a big fat no-no in this genre.
On that note, Danganronpa Zero is actually surprisingly solid in it's writing. The ending being aI was the villain all along?!type deal would no doubt piss people off but it was consistent and a logical conclusion to everything presented within the story (+what readers would know from being familiar with the games beforehand) If anything what it does with Junko retroactively makes some of the earlier stuff in the series more believable

Cute and overly shy is one of Mikan's defining attributes though,along with either being a bully magnet if your a sadist defenseless if you're a white knight. I haven't listened to the dubs but if Mikan sounded like that it at least the actress had her intentions in the right place.
