I had the exact same opinion as yours on Shinsekai. Trippy anime with great ED. I also thought it's plot was absolutely fantastic. No wonder it shows up in 3x3 threads quite often. Unfortunately, it obviously could've been better for many reasons. I would describe Shinsekai as one of the best animes of all time presented badly.
He could have changed his society for the better, and did somewhat with recovering industrial technologies, but he also started a genocidal war and used his own people as sacrificial pawns. It's the same kind of shit that leads to leaders like Hitler and Pol Pot.
Saki pretty much did nothing wrong. Sure she killed a lot of rats, but not needlessly. She was the one who really had a vision for what society could become, and how to try to have humanity come to harmonize with its power.

I didn't like the "rats are/were human" reveal. Sure, it makes sense on an overall level, but it somehow felt tacked on.
"We are humans!" is probably going to stick with me as one of the most iconic individual moments I've seen in anime

A good portion of the show was scenes where they say something along the lines of: "the library never mentioned what happened to the non-cantus humans", "where did the queerats come from", "we are sentient beings as well", "the only difference between us kamisamas is that you have cantus" and I suppose "we are humans" also happens before the reveal if you don't take Squealer as an honest man.

The question is whether or not you believe he was operating, much like the other bakenezumi, for the benefit of the colony and its survival, or if he did all of it for his own ambitions.
In the case of the former, he is taking an extreme interpretation of bakenezumi instinct and culture. In the case of the latter, he is morally bankrupt and justifies the means with the ends.

Yeah, you're right, there was heavy foreshaowing going on (even in the cathphrase of the series, which was "fight against the false gods" or something). "Tacked on" was a bad way of saying it. I guess I just didn't like the concept of the rats too much as a plot element in general. What I enjoyed most about the show was the exploration of a human society having to deal with powers that are far too great for it (Akki, Karma demons etc). I probably would've liked a more character-focused and drama-like approach to the setting.
