It's not a coincidence that Accel and Railgun are touching on this topic at the same time. As much as I wanted to see it, skipping the battle royale in the latter may help the series in the long run since souls do seem like they'll play a big role in the main story. If the main story ever picks up the pace that is.
Is it actually possible that Kamachi substantively returns to the "old gang" for Magic Side? i.e. Index, Kanzaki, Stiyl, Itsuwa, Orsola. The first three have briefly appeared here and there in the NTs but I'm upset that all of them are completely fodderized into irrelevancy. Let's not mention Himegami, who may as well be a Magic character due to her ability.
Notice that the greater half of new characters Kamachi shovels in every volume is Magic-related. The Science folks who got their own important arc early on in the series (with the exception of the clones) have been around forever. Maybe it's because they have meaningful interactions with each other and have development so we care.

It's literally the worst volume. Anons regularly bait people into reading that. My advice is to skip every volume after it from OT, it only gets worse culminating in the borefest known as WW3. Read NT1 instead, that's where the series starts getting good. NT 1, 2 and 3 are the three best in a row.

I'm not that interested in groups other than Tsuchimikado's and, having sort of recently caugh up with Baccano, I don't think Index juggles its huge cast as well. I enjoyed 14 more, it was easier to follow and C Document was a more interesting concept.

Fair enough, only GROUP, ITEM and SCHOOL are important and Hamazura's proper introduction is the main bit of the ITEM plot.

Yeah, a lot of the time new characters introduced fade into irrelevancy rather than taking a major role which is something you'll have to get accustomed to, unfortunately. The main new characters to watch out for in this volume are Kakine, Hamazura and the rest of ITEM since they're the only ones that reoccur in a major way. Kamachi mentions in the afterword for NT10 that he sometimes introduces characters without actually knowing what he'll do with them, which is pretty annoying when you either really like the character or are used to series that takes full advantage of a large cast.

Volume 16 is pretty much just a Saint vs. Saint deal, but 17/18 is back to crazy magician shenanigans while Touma tries to deal with shit. 19 is another Science side Accel/Hamazura affair but it's more focused than Battle Royale (volume 15). Then 20/21/22 is WW3 which I'm sure you've heard quite enough about if you've hung around these threads at all.

Most of pre ww3 just feels like mush in my memories, with stand-out bits being the fights with gods right seat and the England arc, I should probably reread a few of the volumes.
